DAILY ANNOUNCEMENTS 5/25/17

·      Students: ALL library books must be returned BEFORE this Friday, May 26th.  The library will be closed this week due to SOL testing, so please place your library books in the drop-box outside the library.  Also, several personal books were left in the library during SOL testing.  If you left your book there, please stop by the library BEFORE school to claim.

 

·      The DEADLINE TO MAKE ELECTIVE COURSE CHANGES for Rising 7th and 8th graders is THIS FRIDAY, May 26th, at 3:30 pm.  Please have your parent email your grade level counselor with any change requests. 

 

·      Come to Stone Hill's Fine Arts Night:   “A Starry Night on the Hill” on Thursday, June 1st from 6:00-7:30 pm. Student artwork will be on display in the hallways around the courtyard! Enjoy a relaxing evening of fine art from students in grades 6-8. Snacks can be purchased from the LEO Club. Live music performed by the Orchestra students. Students must be accompanied by an adult to attend this event.  

 

·      Any students who are leaving before June 9th please see their grade level counselor several days in advance of their last day.  Counselors need to assist those students with making sure all grades are complete, PE and house lockers are cleaned out and library books are turned in.

 

·      Rising 9th graders: Think about coming out for Rock Ridge Crew next year! We are a co-ed team that rows on the Potomac and competes in regattas on the Occoquan. The Rock Ridge Crew team will be hosting a FREE Learn to Row Clinic at Algonkian Regional Park on Thursday, June 1 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm! Take advantage of this opportunity to learn about the sport of rowing, the boats, conditioning and more. Not only will you meet the Rock Ridge Crew team, but you will receive an introduction to erging, rowing techniques in four- or eight seat boats.  More details will be on RockRidgeCrew.com. ·        Attention all Staff and Students:  The Leo Club is sponsoring a personal hygiene drive for the Loudoun County Free Clinic.  Please donate any of the following items: shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, hairbrush or comb, shaving cream, razors, deodorant, lip balm, soap, and body lotion.  Donated items can be dropped off in the marked boxes in each house and the main lobby.  Thank you for helping support the low income, uninsured families in Loudoun County who depend on this medical service.  Collections will be taken through May 26th

Students - the results are in.  After a close battle between the 6th and 7th graders with the 8th grade not far behind, the winners of the Power 10 Challenge Party NEXT Friday, May 19 from 6-8pm will be...6th grade!  More information will be coming to you soon, 6th graders.  Congratulations!

The final Power 10 Challenge is here!  Tomorrow, Wednesday, May 10, is our LAST battle between the grades!  The winning grade of the Power 10 Challenge will have a free class party next Friday, May 19 from 6-8.  As it stands, the 6th graders are in the lead with 7th

grade a mere two points behind, after a quick rally in the Dime Wars Challenge. Tomorrow's challenge? CLASS COLOR DAY!  Staff you know what that means: JEANS DAY!

·     Attention staff and students: The results of the dime wars are in Rallying toward the end but still coming in 3rd place is eighth grade raising $165. Close to the lead but coming in second place with lots of pennies in their jar is 6th grade raising $327. In first place, and the winning grade for the Lunchroom Dime Wars is 7th grade with $345

 

·     Throughout the week, the school raised $837 with the Dime Wars.  Add on the money teachers donated for jeans on Wednesdays and Leos selling concessions at 3 school events, the school raised close to $2,000 for the March of Dimes, working for stronger, healthier babies.  Thanks to everyone who participated, volunteered and donated!

 

·     During the SOL testing window, the Library will be closed all day every day, except briefly before school.  At that time, students will only be allowed to return books and check-out new ones.  Students will not be allowed to congregate in the Library at that time, but will report to their respective holding areas.  Thank you!

Attention Leo Club members:  There is no executive board meeting today. The next meeting for all members is Thursday, May 4 in the library.  Anyone planning to participate in the March of Dimes Walk on May 7 at Reston Town Center needs to hand in a permission slip to Mrs. Williams or Mrs. Jensen by May 5.  Check the Leo website or an advisor for a permission slip.

 

Do you have an old pair of prescription or reading glasses lying around at home?  If so, please bring them in by Friday, drop them in the box in your house area, and give someone less fortunate the gift of sight. Thank you!

Attention Leo Club members: Thanks to all that worked to make the concession sales at the Talent Show a success!  The executive board meeting is CANCELLED for Thursday, April 27.  The next general meeting for all members is Thursday, May 4 in the library after school.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB-- One of my students restarted the environmental club. The club will be doing things like raising awareness about the harm of littering and pollution, and going out to clean up the community. If you are interested in joining this club, the first meeting is THIS Thursday in Mr. Hein's room,  C12C, right after school. The regular club meeting days will be Wednesdays, after the initial meeting.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes is cancelled for this week.  We will resume our meetings next week.

 

Attention students and staff!  Get your dimes and other change ready!  This month’s Power 10 Challenge is the Dime War!  The Dime War begins next week!  Fish that quarter out of the bottom of your backpack, grab that dime on the floor of the car, and pull that rumpled dollar bill out of your coat pocket!  The Leo Club is sponsoring the Dime Wars to raise money for the March of Dimes every day this week during lunch.  So, students and staff, bring in your loose change and bills starting Monday to support research and care for premature babies.  Drop dimes, other coins, or dollar bills into your grade’s container in the cafeteria and help your grade win this month’s Power 10 Challenge!  (There will be a jar at Rock Ridge!) May the best grade win!  P.S. A special shout out to the language arts teachers for sharing the March of Dimes PowerPoint with their classes!  You rock!

This fun event will feature animals from Homeward Trails Animal Rescue. Money will be raised through the sales of student artwork, a raffle, and a silent auction. Cash or check only. 100% of the proceeds will go to local animal rescue organizations. All students must be accompanied by an adult. We look forward to seeing you there!

SHMS play the Lion King Jr. will take place tonight March 31st and April 1st at 7 pm.  Come for a Roaring good time. Ticket will also be sold at the show.
 

·         Hey Stingrays, did you know April is Autism Awareness Month?  This Sunday, April 2nd is World Autism Day.  On Monday, let’s show our support and Light it Up Blue at Stone Hill! Wear as much blue as you can! Yes staff, this means jeans too!

 

·      If you signed up for a Talent Show audition, the audition schedule is posted outside of the Choral 1 room. Check to make sure that your date and time work for you. Auditions begin on Monday after school!

 

·      Are you interested in taking your programming skills to the next level?  There is a new club starting at Stone Hill.  In this SHMS Coding Club, Students will be introduced to a basic understanding in HTML, CSS, and JAVA.  Students will participate in a variety of coding-related projects, such as graphics and learning how to create a website.  This club will be led by Mrs. Crissman joined by two Rock Ridge High School students from 8-8:30 a.m. weekly on Tuesdays.  Note that in order to participate, students will need to be driven to school on club days, in order to begin promptly at 8am.  Students must be able to make all club dates in order to participate.  Club dates are tentatively scheduled for the following dates:  4/4, 4/18, 4/25, 5/2, 5/9, 5/16, 5/23, 5/30.  The club has 30 seats – first come; first serve.  See Mrs. Crissman in Lab 2 for a permission slip and more information.

 

·         Attention 8th grade students: Victor O’Neill studios will be onsite Tuesday, April 18th @ 8:45 am to photograph our 8th grade class.  This event will be held in the main gym on the bleachers before students depart for RRHS. Teachers please check your staff mailbox for order forms.  Order forms will be passed out to students during last block TODAY (Friday, March 31)Payment is due to Ms. La’Mon before picture day (check/cash or online).

·        German Club meets today at 3:30 in Room B7. Come join the fun as we color Easter eggs and discuss the origin of some of our Easter traditions.

 

·     Attention Leo Club members:  There are still openings for the community service trip to the Lions Club eyeglass recycling center in Arlington on Saturday, April 1 from 10-12:30.  Permission slips can be obtained and returned to Mrs. Williams in room C-1 or Mrs. Jensen in room A17A.  Two parents are willing to drive other students if you need a ride- check with your advisors.  There is NO MEETING on Thursday, March 30.  The next general meeting for all members will be Thursday, April 6 in the library.

Choir students from each of the feeder elementary schools will sing, and High School band, orchestra, chorus, and guitar students will join together in a HUGE GRAND FINALE.  Come out and hear it if you are in the area!

(e-mail Mrs. Lanham to purchase). This is a great way to support students in Stone Hill's music department!

·        ParentVue and StudentVue will be open for rising 7th and rising 8th grade students for you to review the classes and make edits to electives from January 30th - February 17th.  You will be able to view the core classes that have been recommended by your child’s teachers.  If you would like to make changes to the core class recommendations, please send an email to your child's counselor so that you can have a discussion about the proposed change.  As a department, our strong suggestion will be to stick with what the teacher has recommended at the moment and plan to contact us later in the school year if you still want to make a change. This will give us an opportunity to look at how your child has performed this year and have a more in-depth conversation with the teacher about the workload, work completion, and study habits.  The presentation will be posted to the School Counseling website after the parent night on the 24th.

·        Get ready for the Stone Hill Bookfest! This event will be after school, here at Stone Hill on March 3, from 5-7. Theme rooms, bookmark making, and a pony! Permission forms and a $5 donation should be given to your English teacher by February 17. The LEO Club will be selling pizza, water, and snacks to raise money for the March of Dimes. Bring your friends and get ready to have a great time! ·        Reminder to all Guitar Students:   Project forms are now past due topics are listed in the music room.   Only students on the "approved" ensemble list may stay after school today until 5:00 p.m.  The group will meet in the cafeteria at 3:30 and then move to the auditorium.

Congratulations to Stone Hill student Aidan Preshong who auditioned last Friday at Belmont Ridge Middle School.  Aiden has been chosen as one of 60 Advanced guitarists from 13 different middle schools who will join together to perform under a guest conductor in the Loudoun-county Guitar Festival next month.  Congratulations Aiden!

This season there have been many wonderful Stone Hill musical concerts, and there are still performances and rehearsals being held on stage. This afternoon is a very important rehearsal for all GREEN Chorus 6 students.  At the end of the day, Mrs. Lanham will meet her Choral students in the front of the auditorium.  The music students should sign -in and sit by row in order to receive a grade for this required rehearsal. Second bus call students could really help out by remaining seated quietly while the choral students get settled.  For many it is the first time they have been on stage.  The concert is next week. Today's rehearsal will end at 4:30 p.m.  

 

In celebration of Stone Hill's TENTH year, we will be hosting a Power 10 challenge between all three grade levels.  The grade which gains the most collective points between now and May will earn a grade-wide party on the evening of Friday, May 19th, complete with games and dancing! The first Power 10 challenge is coming on up Tuesday, January 10th!  On Tuesday, we will be hosting a CLASS COLOR day.  Every student who participates in the CLASS COLOR CHALLENGE will earn a point for their grade level.  5th block teachers will be tallying points in their classes. Come in and show your spirit!  Happy ten years, Stone Hill!

DAILY ANNOUNCEMENTS 12/16/16

 

Spelling Club will not meet on Monday. 

 

On December 14th after school the 7th grade OTTW Shark Tank project reached its’ culmination.  Round #3, was judged by Rock Ridge High School students, who are taking business management and or are members of DECA or FBLA. RRHS judges were judging 4 winners from A Day History teachers and 5 winners from B Day History teachers which were select in round #2 from each block.  Using strict criteria and personal judgement, the RRHS Sharks picked two winners. The A day winning product was Relax Pack, a messaging back pack for stressed students. The B day winning product was KIGSSHOE a shoe that grows with your child.  When asked why these two products were selected, RRHS Shark Judges said, “They were unique, eye catching and were able to answer any questions we asked”. Winners received first place medals, an inflatable shark and #1 bragging rights in the 7th grade house showcase.

Bible Club will hold its inaugural meeting for the school year tomorrow morning in Room B-7 at 8. We will be singing Christmas carols and sharing goodies.  All (including staff and parents) are welcome.

The Step Up Loudoun Youth Competition registration closes on December 16th.  The Step Up Loudoun Youth Competition encourages middle and high school youth across the county to identify an issue in their school, neighborhood or community, create a plan to address that issue, and implement the plan. Testing as part of the admissions process for Thomas Jefferson HS will take place this Saturday, December 3rd. You should have received information from TJ regarding your assigned test site. If you did not receive any information and you do not know where you will be testing this Saturday, please contact TJ directly at 571-423-3770. No students are permitted in the building until 8:00.  Leave cell phones and watches at home- they are not permitted in the testing area! Parents are not permitted in the building at all.

Staff and students: The Toys for Joy Drive continues until Thursday, Dec 1.  Please bring in an UNWRAPPED, NEW gift or toy for a middle of high schooler.  These gifts go to students in our school area whose families may not be able to purchase holiday gifts because of financial struggles.  Make a kid smile this holiday season and drop a gift off in the designated box in the main office.

 Congratulations to 8th grader Jennifer Abraham who has been named one of Creative Communications’ top ten winners, for grades 7-9, in the United States and Canada.  Jennifer’s poem may be found on their website.

The Leo Club is helping to sponsor the Toys for Joy toy drive to benefit families in our local schools who may not receive many gifts this holiday season due to family financial struggles.  You can help put a smile on a teen’s face this holiday by donating a gift appropriate for a middle schooler or high schooler.  Bring the NEW and UNWRAPPED gift to school and place it in the box in the main lobby by the auditorium.  The drive ends December 1st.

 

The “Chill Bowl” on Friday. December 2nd has been postponed. More information to follow.

Attention Leo Club members: Our general meeting is for all members, Thursday Nov 17 in the library.  Members please bring your pet food donations and markers to make posters.

 

All staff and students: There are only a few days left to help the Loudoun Pet Pantry.  The Leo Club and the 6/7th grade Spectrum classes are sponsoring a Pet Food Drive to benefit this organization whose mission is to help keep pets in loving homes.  Please bring in canned or 3-10 # bags of cat or dog food and drop it off in the specially marked bins and boxes in the main lobby or house areas until Friday, Nov 18Last year this organization distributed 10,000 pounds of pet food (donated by concerned people like you) to families in need.  Thank you for your donations.

 

Spelling Club will meet this coming Monday (the 21st) and the following Monday (the 28th).  See you there!
