Sports play a significant role in the U.S. and the contributions of African-American athletes often have transcended the playing field and paved the way for larger changes in society.

The sports exhibit at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture chronicles the stories of these athletes and their struggles. In our last Black History Month video, Simone Manuel, the Olympic swimmer who made history at the 2016 Rio Olympics as the first African American woman to win an individual gold medal in swimming, tours the sports exhibit at the Smithsonian African American Museum of History and Culture.

The PBIS Committee would like to recognize two of our staff for 2nd quarter as great examples of recognizing and teaching positive behavior. We would like to recognize Mrs. Beth Carter for always going above and beyond for all students, not just her own. Mrs. Carter builds positive relationships with students and recognizes that different students have different needs.

We would also like to recognize Ms. Rebekah Prinz, one of our teacher assistants, for also building positive relationships with students. Ms. Prinz always has a calm demeanor and a smile on her face, and it is clear how much she cares about all students.

Requested by The Thunder Buddy Club:  Did everyone receive a heart compliment on their lockers and staff doors?  Did you know we prepared approximately 1400 hearts for staff and students at Seneca?  Remember, the Kindness Challenge does not have to stop this week.  An act of kindness can be as easy as a friendly smile to a stranger, holding the doors for others, helping someone with a routine task or thanking a veteran.  Do your part to make the world a better place, and be kind to others.

Our final kindness thought of the day, in honor of Black History Month, is a quote from Maya Angelou, a famous African American writer:  "The best part of life is not just surviving, but thriving with passion and compassion, humor and style and generosity and kindness.
