    Food for Neighbors Update
For those of you who participated in last week's Food for Neighbor's event (and passed along the plea for help) - THANK YOU!  What a huge success - and didn't it feel great to be collecting food again for our local teens?! It's always amazing to see members of our community come together to help local students that need support. Thanks to your hard work, our bins are full and we're ready to continue with our weekly food distribution.

If you are interested in additional volunteering between now and our next Red Bag event in November, here is a link to our bi-weekly sorting and weekly bag delivery to our schools. We are so thankful to Riverside Presbyterian Church here in Sterling for thier partnership this year.  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0d45afac29a5fc1-ffnfall

Feel free to share this link with others. Teen volunteers need to be accompanied by an adult. Masks must be worn at all times. Additional CDC guidelines listed in the sign up.

We will ask that if they are not already registered as a volunteer on the Food for Neighbors website, that they do that also.

MAP testing in Algebra 1 & Geometry classes

All Algebra 1 and Geometry students will take the Northwest Evaluation Association's Measures of Academic Progress (NWEA MAP) Math Growth assessment three times this year (Fall, Winter, & Spring). The first round of MAP testing will occur from September 21 to October 16. Your math teacher will notify students of their testing date and time.

Details on the MAP assessment are available on the LCPS website at https://www.lcps.org/Page/231408

    Parent Access to Schoology

Starting this year, all student classes in LCPS are hosted in Schoology. This program was chosen, in part, because it has built-in parent access. All student assignments can be found in Schoology. However, official grades are all posted in ParentVUE/StudentVUE.

    • Parents access Schoology via their ParentVUE account. Those unable to access ParentVUE should call Michelle Dillistin at 571/440-2530 ext. 60732

    • Parent info sheets are available in multiple languages:
    • Parents should access the “Schoology Parent Experience” to get the most of their Schoology account. Select the appropriate language below to learn how.

    BB Virtual Fun Run

The Virtual Fun Run is being hosted by the Backpack Buddies Foundation of Loudoun.  We are still accepting runners and walkers to help raise money to go right back to the schools and their Backpack Buddies programs for the 2020-2021 school year.  Already this year the Foundation has given out just under 125,000 in grants to the programs and businesses that help support your schools programs.  Without our usually Friendsgiving gala, we are looking at other avenues to have fun and raise money.  Sign up here!

I hope your first week of school went well. I just have a couple notes for you!

Attendance: During the month of September, it is important that Loudoun County Public Schools capture student daily attendance Monday – Friday to provide accurate attendance reports.  Monday is an asynchronous day for middle and high school students; therefore, there will be no synchronous learning.  In order to be counted present, your student must open the Permission Click link that has been sent to their LCPS email account and respond to the three reflective questions prior to 1:00 pm.  If they do not respond, your student will be counted absent on Monday.  If you are also a parent of an elementary age student, attendance will be taken during their synchronous morning meeting.  Thank you for helping us to capture your student’s attendance on Monday!

Nicknames: Many people use something other than their legal first name as their primary name. If your child has a name they prefer to use in class that is NOT their legal first name, you can correct that in ParentVUE.
    • Log on to ParentVUE
    • Click on Student Info (at the left)
    • Click on Edit Information (near the top, under the student's name)
    • Enter the appropriate name in the NICKNAME field
On the evening of Monday September 14, 2020, LCPS will update student first names to the ParentVUE nickname (if one is listed).  If no nickname is listed, the student’s current first name will continue to be used for LCPS Go, Google and MS Office.

Google Bombing: We wanted to thank you for working with us as we embark into this new school year. As some of you may have experienced, we have been dealing with individuals “google bombing” classes. Individuals (likely students) are getting links to google meets and taking over the screen and posting pictures and videos that are inappropriate.

We are investigating each incident and disciplining students when this happens. This is happening all over the county, and we are working with our technology department and the sheriff’s office to provide an environment where this is prevented. Please continue to work with us if/when this happens and know that your students' safety and learning environment are the most important things to us, and we have spent many hours this week working through each incident.

Overall – we have had a pretty successful first week. We are committed to continuing to work to make this the best possible experience for each student and strive to improve every day.

    Thank you for your support.

    Dr. Wolfe

    Good evening, Panther Community!

This week we start back to school. It will look very different this year. Instead of coming to our building, students will be setting up their Chromebook in a comfortable spot in their home. Instead of a bell ringing here to start class, students will need to set their own alarms to make sure they are in their Advisory Google Meet at 9am every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. (In fact, it might be smart for them to set alarms for the beginning of every period.) While there are no periods set for Mondays, students are still responsible for logging on to Schoology and doing work that day. That said, some things will remain the same. Teachers will still be taking attendance every period and offering high-quality instruction to all our students. If a student cannot attend a class on Tuesday-Friday, the parent must submit a reason for their absence, tardy or early dismissal through ParentVUE. Instructions are here.

Students can find the link for their classes' Google Meets in Schoology. A video introduction for Schoology is here. They get to Schoology through LCPS Go. All assignments will be posted in Schoology, but grades are still posted in ParentVUE/StudentVUE.

Please keep in mind that students need to be using their LCPS Google account (studentID@lcps.org) for schoolwork. You cannot use your personal Gmail account to get in to our class Meets. Teachers will be recording all the classes, so it is the student's responsibility to decide whether or not to leave their cameras on. Check our Tech for Panthers website if you want information on using your Chromebook, getting tech help, or discounted programs for LCPS students.

As we are confined to working online, rather than in person, there are many programs our teachers will be using to enhance their classes, some of which require parent approval. So you aren't bombarded with permission forms from every teacher - many requesting the same program - we are doing a schoolwide permission form. When you complete this form, you will be telling all the teachers whether or not you give permission for the following programs: Delta Math, Nearpod, Flipgrid, PearDeck, EdPuzzle, Socrative, Padlet, Quizizz, Khan Academy, Kami, Kahoot, Quizlet, MosaMack, Jason Project, Runestone Academy & Jefferson Labs. If there are additional programs that are just for one class, only the students/parents in that class will receive a separate permission form for them. We hope this cuts down on the number of forms you have to fill out this year!

Parents, please make sure that you have completed the Virtual First Day. It requires you to log on to ParentVUE, verify that all the information is up-to-date, and acknowledge the rights & responsibilities (click here for details). Once you finish that, you'll be able to see your child's schedule. You only have to do that once at the beginning of each school year. Students also have a similar process. When they first log on to StudentVUE, they will need to confirm the student rights & responsibilities. They download a copy of the document, type their name exactly as it appears in the top right of the screen, then click I Acknowledge Receipt. Only after they complete this can they see their schedule. Both these procedures - Virtual First Day and the Student Acknowledgements - must be completed on the website. You cannot do it on the app.

Finally, please don't forget to join the Parent-Teacher-Student Organization! You can register at this link and pay your membership dues here. Wishing you all a great start to the school year!

    Sincerely,
    Dr. Brandon Wolfe
    Principal
    Potomac Falls High School

    Distance Learning Schedule (Tue-Fri)

    Advisory - 9:00-9:20a

    Block 1/5 - 9:26-10:26a

    Learning Lab - 10:27-10:49a

    Block 2/6- 10:54-11:54a

    Learning Lab - 11:55-12:17p

    Lunch - 12:22-1:07p

    Block 3/7 - 1:07-2:07p

    Learning Lab - 2:08-2:30p

    Block 4/8 - 2:35-3:35p

    Learning Lab - 3:36-3:58p

We strongly suggest that you set alarms for the beginning/end of classes. You are undoubtedly used to the bell, but you don’t have that anymore. You can set recurring alarms to keep yourself on track, so you have one less thing to stress about.

    Welcome Back, Panthers!

Our staff has been working hard this summer to prepare for the new school year. Through the changes from hybrid to distance learning, we are doing the best we can to make sure we offer the best for our Panther community.

We will be 100% distance learning to start off the year. All grades and attendance will be posted in ParentVUE/StudentVUE. All student coursework will be posted on Schoology. Parents will have access to view their child's assignments and courses in Schoology, which they hadn't been able to do before. Mondays are set aside for meetings, planning and asynchronous work, with no live classes. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays our A-day classes will meet virtually, using Google Meet, following the bell schedule. On Thursdays and Fridays, our B-day classes will meet virtually, using Google Meet and the same bell schedule. Students will meet with each class for one hour, twice a week. In addition to work assigned in class, they will also have asynchronous homework to complete during the week. Learning from home requires some preparation to help a student succeed. Here are some tips for parents setting up a supportive home learning environment.

    Some Important Dates:

    • Fri., August 28 - Schedules will appear in ParentVue/StudentVUE. You will be forced to acknowledge the rights & responsibilities when you log on. Resources on how to use ParentVUE are available on this website.

NOTE: Some students have logged in to apps in LCPSGO and viewed what appears to be their scheduled teachers for the 2020-2021 school year. Please keep in mind that all schedule information viewed prior to August 28, 2020 in any application is not final. Scheduling activities are still in full swing, and major changes occur daily. We appreciate everyone’s eagerness to review schedules and your understanding while we continue to make changes to ensure each student is scheduled appropriately. We welcome you to log into ParentVUE and StudentVUE on Friday, August 28th, 2020 to review your student’s schedule.

    • Mon., August 31 - Courses will appear in Schoology. To access it, log on to ParentVUE/StudentVUE. On the left, click on the Schoology logo. There will be a short training you can access when you get there. However, if you'd like a sneak peek, watch this YouTube playlist.

Our Virtual Back to School Night is also tonight from 5-7pm. Back To School Night looks a little different this year - you'll be joining the classes online! Full details are below & will be posted at https://sites.google.com/lcps.org/btsn2020/home.

    Dear Potomac Falls Families,

I wanted to thank all of you for your support and understanding as we have gone through quite a strange and difficult time. This is unprecedented but you have been patient, understanding and supportive and we genuinely appreciate that. I also want to congratulate all of our seniors on reaching graduation. Even though it is not what you expected or planned – we wish you the best in all of your future endeavors. And to all of our returning and new students and families. I wish you a safe and restful summer and look forward to greeting you all in the fall!

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Wolfe

    Senior Celebration

LCPS has partnered with Herff-Jones to produce our virtual celebration. They created this senior celebration from the photos and messages students uploaded. The link to view our virtual celebration is potomacfhs.stageclip.com. The video went live at 2:00 PM on June 9th, but you can still view it. Thank you for your continued dedication and patience on this important 2020 Celebration.

    In-Person Graduation 2020

Previously, you received notice from Dr. Williams that we now have clearance to hold face-to-face ceremonies per our Governor's Phase One Blueprint. Since then, we have been working diligently as a team to develop a plan that ensures safety for our staff and school community, is aligned with LCPS standards, and celebrates the students in the Class of 2020. I've outlined how the process will work here at PFHS below.

    • Ceremonies will take place on Monday, June 22 and Wednesday, June 24 in our temperature-controlled Auditorium.
    • Distancing guidelines will require that we do not have hand-to hand contact and safe measures will be in place for diploma distribution.
    • Students will be assigned a thirty-minute window (some time between 9 am and 4:30 pm) during which they will walk across the stage and receive their diploma.
    • Students will be permitted to have 5 family members attend with them (6 people total).
    • Students and their family members must arrive ten minutes prior to their 30-minute window and expect to wait up to 30 minutes to get across the stage and get their diploma.
    • Students will have their name called, turn their tassels, receive their diploma and have a picture on our main stage.
    • Professional photographers will be in attendance to take a formal stage photo for purchase.
    • If there are family conflicts with the week of June 22 and 24, we will work to host a make-up ceremony on July 1.

You will be provided maps, details and additional safety measures soon. If you choose to forgo the ceremony, you can schedule a time to pick up your diploma through your counselor.

Invitations including your assigned timeslot will be emailed directly to the student at their LCPS Gmail address. Please check your inboxes! As we know that not all of your friends and family will be able to attend, we will be streaming it live at https://live.myvrspot.com/st?cid=ZWFjZG

    Summer Assignments

It's very important - especially in these chaotic times - to refresh and expand what we learned over the summer. Several of our classes have posted summer assignments. You can access them from our Summer Assignment page.

Just a friendly reminder that all students will have a math summer assignment in preparation of their upcoming class in the fall.  Please refer to the PFHS summer assignment link to access the summer assignment.  The link has directions on how to download or print the assignment.

    Message from the PTSO
Our PTSO wants to let you know that during the COVID-19 shutdown while our teachers maintain curriculum and attempt to capture the attention of our "virtual students", they have also been going above and beyond their job descriptions.  Not a week goes by without teachers and staff offering their time, resources, ideas, and sharing their concerns about how to care for our students. Although our teachers are missing the in-person time with our students, they are not missing a beat!  We get notes of appreciation daily with the sincerest sentiments, and we truly appreciate each of them.

We just want to say a resounding THANK YOU PFALLS faculty and staff!!!  There has never been a more rewarding time to be a PTSO volunteer in the PFHS Panther community.

    Behind the Wheel Notice

Driving is SUCH AN EXCITING time in a teenager’s life and the current pandemic is surely impacting this for many of our students. ☹

There are a lot of questions coming in about Behind the Wheel instruction, so here is the latest information we have.

The main piece of information involves Executive Order 7 from the Governor’s Office. This order specifically acknowledges private/commercial schools and has suspended Behind the Wheel for private/commercial companies until June 10th.

At this time, all BTW operations for LCPS are still suspended – in addition to no in-car instruction, this also includes no exchanging of paperwork i.e. DEC-8’s and TDL’s. Please know that we monitor and evaluate this decision regularly based on information from DOE, DMV, and the Governor’s Office as it’s made available. LCPS will resume paperwork distribution and in-car instruction when it is safe to do so.

    Notes from Counseling

Virtual Loudoun Summer Term 3: Registration closed May 15. Students who have registered and are approved for virtual courses will receive a welcome email from their instructor on the Friday before their virtual course opens, with directions detailing how to begin their classes on Monday, the first day of the virtual term. The courses begin on June 1 and end August 7.

School Counseling Lessons: The school counseling department continues to provide students with weekly lessons. Lessons average about 10 – 15 minutes with helpful tips, plans, and resources. • AN IMPORTANT NOTE TO SENIORS: please check your LCPS email several times a week until the end of the school year for valuable information required for graduation. LCPS requires every senior to provide post-secondary information prior to graduation, i.e., attending college, military, GAP year, employment, scholarships offered, etc.  Specific Senior Survey information and directions were emailed in an upcoming weekly Counseling Lesson. Please complete this information carefully in Naviance under the “About Me tab”,  go to “surveys not completed”, then “2020 Graduation Survey”. Through this survey completion, Seniors will indicate where they would like their final transcript sent. Incomplete information may result in transcripts not being sent. Every Senior MUST complete this survey.

    SENIOR PARENTS:

    Help Support School Supply Kits

To continue supporting the Continuity of Education in Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) during COVID-19 closure, LCPS and the Loudoun Education Foundation (LEF) have partnered to mail school supply kits to LCPS students who may lack access to basic school supplies, to include all LCPS Title I elementary and middle school students. School supply kits have been customized to align to the specific needs of instructional learning guides/mailings.

The LEF is currently fundraising for this initiative and donation information can be found on this flyer. The red “Sponsor a $25 Kit” button will redirect you to the LEF donation webpage. Under gift designation, please select “School Supply Kits.”

Please direct all inquiries to Veronica Cuadrado Hart, EL Family and Community Engagement Coordinator (veronica.cuadrado@lcps.org).

Paralleling efforts, including the mailing of books and educational magazine subscriptions, are forthcoming through a collaboration between the Office of Teaching and Learning and Instructional Programs.

    Sources of Strength
The PFHS Sources of Strength peer leaders put together some wonderful social distancing advice and activity resources! Students and families are encouraged to access these resources and can find them here: https://www.lcps.org/Page/228325. During this time of uncertainty and fear, let’s make a collective effort to spread hope, help and strength!

    Panthers Helping Panthers
As we navigate through this new experience together, the parent liaisons at Potomac Falls High School want you to know that we are available to help.  If you find you are food insecure and need help, please reach out to our parent liaisons at Helen.Chang@lcps.org or Judy.Schmid@lcps.org.  We will try to provide as many resources and assistance as we can to ensure our students remain safe and healthy during this time away from school.  Thank you and stay healthy!!
