We are reaching out to ask you to take part in our school survey if you didn't last week. Your responses are completely anonymous, and the survey will take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete.

The last day to complete the survey is this Friday, February 26th. Please respond using the appropriate link below.

Thank you for taking part in this important initiative! We appreciate you!

    Sincerely,

    Principal

    Time Management Skills
On February 23 - 25, students in grades 9 - 11 will be working on activities during advisory that focus on time management skills. These activities are designed to help students manage their time this year and plan for next year. As students go through the process of selecting their courses for next year, we encourage them to think carefully about their schedules, including any responsibilities or activities that fall outside of the normal school day.

If you would like to view the activities, click on the links below:

A HUGE THANK YOU to our Assistant Principal, Mari Estrada for reviewing in detail the "Returning to School in Person" presentation!  It was such a complete overview of what our students can expect upon their return to the building.  We also appreciated the incredibly upbeat report from Mr. Wells on our Fine Arts Program. SAT PREP CLASSES ON HOLD
One of the best programs our PFHS PTSO has facilitated with the help of our teachers, has been the SAT Prep Classes and the practice tests administered at our school over the past several years. It is the only one of it's kind that was available to all LCPS students. The teachers and the parent that spear-headed the program have all moved on to other endeavours this year. If you have an interest in being part of a committee that can find a new way to make this resource available, please let us know!

As our second year as a PTSO Board winds down, we want to thank our incredible PFHS community for supporting every effort to share relevant information, and spread a little school spirit in our community. It is a privilege to serve our own students and teachers in this way.
If you would like to know more about joining a team who has found a way to make a difference, please reach out to us at: pfhs.ptso.president@gmail.com. We'd love to hear from you!

    Your PFHS PTSO Exec Team,

    Good afternoon!

Many of our students will be returning to the building starting this Tuesday. The remainder of our hybrid students return on Wednesday, March 3rd.

Not sure which days your child is attending? Log on to ParentVUE/StudentVUE and select Student Info. Scroll down to Return-to-School. It will state if you are registered as 100% distance or Hybrid in-person and distance learning. Under S2 in person learning days, it will state whether you are either TW (attending Tuesdays and Wednesdays) or RF (attending Thursdays and Fridays).

Each day, students and all other visitors to the school building must complete the daily COVID symptom checker survey. A daily link to the survey will go to the primary parent email. The parent can choose to enter the student's cell phone number to receive a daily text to the link, as well. If you do not receive those, you can find the link on the bottom right of the PFHS website and on flyers on the outer doors. Before entering the building, you must show the completed survey with the green checkmark. If the survey does not approve your return to school, you must stay home. Parents/guardians are asked to inform the school using the Absentee Line (571-434-3202) or ParentVUE that their student will be absent.

As you enter the building through the front entrance, you must wear a face mask (covering the nose and mouth) and remove any hats, hoods and glasses so a thermal imaging camera will note your temperature. The camera will identify students, staff, and visitors that register an elevated temperature of 100.4°F or higher, so they can be isolated in the Care Room for verification and/or treatment. Staff will also randomly check temperatures with a no-touch thermometer.

Everyone in the building must wear a face mask and maintain social distancing. Hand sanitizer is available in strategic locations for your use. Each classroom has a special air filtration system and plastic shields on the desks to minimize transmission of germs. Common and high-touch areas are cleaned periodically throughout the day and the entire building is given a thorough cleaning each night.

The cafeteria will supply FREE breakfast, lunch, snack and supper to ALL students. They will be bagged and ready for pickup before school (breakfast) and during lunch shifts. Pick up the snack and supper (if the parent sent a request to the principal ahead of time) at the end of the school day. There is no à la carte menu, only bagged meals.

Please help us keep everyone safe and provide a healthy environment for our students by coming to school prepared with the following each day:
    • Take the daily COVID survey. Have it up on your phone as you enter the building.
    • Wear a comfortable face mask. Your mouth & nose must be completely covered.
    • Bring your Chromebook & charger to participate in the lessons.
    • Bring your own headphones or earbuds with microphone for class discussions.

We are looking forward to seeing our students back in the building!

    BrightBytes Survey 2021
Our school is partnering with BrightBytes, a data analytics organization built specifically for K-12, to provide insights into our new and changing learning environments with the goal of ensuring equitable learning support for all students.

To gain these insights, we are asking students in grades 3-12, teachers, building administrators, and parents/guardians to participate in a short survey. Please know that all of your responses will remain anonymous to protect your privacy.

Your participation is extremely important to us. It will give us a comprehensive understanding of our school and students’ needs and areas for improvement. All responses will remain anonymous to protect participant privacy. The survey will take approximately 8-10 minutes to complete.

The data collection window is set to run from February 16 to 26. The unique survey links for each stakeholder group will be sent out via ConnectEd on Tuesday morning, when the survey opens

Thank you for your support with this important initiative! We appreciate you.

    Attention PFHS Families

In an effort to promote mental health awareness in our teens, the Unified Mental Health Team (UMHT) at Potomac Falls High School is sharing a presentation on Mental Health Matters for parents and caregivers. The presentation focuses on dispelling myths about mental health and suicide, how to talk with your child about mental health, and ways to seek help. This presentation is a companion to the one that all ninth grade students received on January 12th and 13th during Health and PE classes.  Their presentation educated students about resiliency and healthy ways to manage life’s stressors using the Sources of Strength model.  Help-seeking behaviors were taught for when students may be experiencing mental health struggles, including sharing their concerns with a trusted adult. If you have any questions about the presentations, please contact Dr. Gallup Larsen (psychologist) at Virginia.Larsen@lcps.org. If you or your child is in need of additional support, please contact your child’s counselor or Dr. Gallup Larsen.

    Survey Request
This year is the first year we are offering AP Research to our students. AP Research is the second year of the AP Capstone Program. Students are working all year on an independent research project of their choosing and design. Many students are using surveys to collect data for their projects.

Some surveys are directed towards students or specific groups (i.e. people who skateboard), other surveys are open to all individuals of any age group. In the virtual setting, they've faced many challenges collecting data and finding suitable projects that are feasible during COVID-19. Any help or support would be greatly appreciated---so we created a Google Site with the surveys from all AP Research students to help increase participation.

Here is the link to our class site: https://sites.google.com/lcps.org/pfhs-ap-research/home. If you have time, we would love for you to participate.

Please feel free to share with anyone and participation is 100% optional! There are no known risks associated with participation, but again please know this is completely voluntary and confidential.

Thank you all for your time and consideration.

Class of 2024 Hybrid Student Orientation

On Monday, February 8, Potomac Falls High School will welcome ninth grade students who chose the hybrid model of instruction for the second semester. Link Crew Leaders will take these students on a tour of PFHS. While we are not certain when LCPS will move to the hybrid model of concurrent learning, we are very excited to welcome members of our freshmen class to the building for a tour.

Tours will begin promptly at 9am and continue throughout the day. All students must wear a mask for the entirety of the tour. All students will have to pass a health screening before participating. All students should enter through the main entrance. If you arrive early, you will be asked to sit in the cafeteria until your scheduled tour time.

To maintain safety and proper social distancing, we will be following the schedule sent out to all families who chose the hybrid model of instructions for the second semester. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from PFHS.

In the event school buildings are closed due to inclement weather, the orientation will be rescheduled to a later date.

This tour is not required, but we hope you’ll join us for this event!

We look forward to meeting you in person,

    Brandon Wolfe
    Principal

The PFHS Guitar Department presented its virtual Winter Guitar Ensemble Concert on Thursday, January 7th, 2020.  The students of the Intermediate Ensemble, Advanced Ensemble, Artist Ensemble, and the PFHS Guitar Quartet all performed as part of this exciting endeavor and created some fantastic performances for our community.  Even in a virtual world our Panther guitarists will find a way to share their passion and talents with our audience.  The link below is the YouTube posting of the concert.  If you would like more information on the PFHS Guitar program or on how to join the Friends of PFHS Guitar booster's organization, contact Mr. Wells at William.Wells@lcps.org

    Attention 9th Grade Families

In an effort to promote mental health awareness in our teens, the Unified Mental Health Team (UMHT) at Potomac Falls High School will be offering the Mental Health Matters presentation to ninth graders on January 12th and 13th during Health and PE classes.  The presentation educates students about resiliency and healthy ways to manage life’s stressors using the Sources of Strength model.  Help-seeking behaviors are taught for when students may be experiencing mental health struggles.  They are taught to share their concerns with a trusted adult.  The lesson is presented by the school psychologist, school social worker, and school counselors. Students are given information as how to contact UMHT members for follow-up, as well as contact information for urgent situations.   If you do not wish for your student to participate, please send an email to your child’s HE/PE Teacher by Friday, January 8th opting your child out of the presentation. Additionally, if you have any questions please contact Dr. Gallup Larsen at Virginia.Larsen@lcps.org.

    Self-Care During Break

With all the changes we have experienced this past year, it is normal to experience many feelings. As we prepare for our upcoming break, it is important to take this time to recharge and work on self-care. Self-care is giving others the best of ourselves instead of giving what we have left. Reflect on what type of self-care is best for you. Is it going for long walks? Talking to others? Journaling? Exercising? While schools are closed, we invite you to review some of our resources below. On behalf of the PFHS United Mental Health Team, we wish you a safe and healthy holiday season and look forward to reconnecting in the new year!

    PFHS Excellence in Education Honorees

Being among the top 5 percent of academic achievers in Loudoun County Public Schools’ senior class is an accomplishment worth celebrating. In lieu of the Loudoun Education Foundation’s annual Excellence in Education Banquet, LCPS is celebrating the members of the Class of 2021 who achieved this distinction here.

The Potomac Falls High School seniors listed below were to have been honored at the 38th Annual Excellence in Education Banquet on December 6. LCPS and the Loudoun Education Foundation want to make sure the community recognizes these students’ academic accomplishments.

The Loudoun high school seniors honored at the Excellence in Education Banquet are those in the Class of 2021 from the LCPS’ 16 high schools with a graduating class and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology who have ranked in the top 5 percent of their class academically during the first three years of their high school career.  Students also are recognized for their selection as a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist or National Hispanic Recognition Scholar.

The honored students from Potomac Falls High School include:
