Opt-In Consent for Third-Party Educational Tools and Services

Parent/Guardian Information and Opt-In Consent for Third-Party Educational Tools and Services

As part of our efforts to provide an engaging learning experience, Loudoun County Public Schools uses a range of digital tools and services to support instruction and enhance student learning. Some of these tools are provided by third-party technology providers, such as Google Maps, YouTube, Google Translate, and other third-party platforms.

These services may be used in the classroom to support curriculum areas such as geography, science, literacy, and digital citizenship. LCPS uses these services to help make learning more interactive and accessible, to provide students with real-world tools and experiences, or to support different learning styles through visual and interactive content.

Beginning in the 2025-2026 school year, LCPS will be required to collect verifiable consent from a parent/guardian if they wish to “opt-in” their students for access to these third-party applications not designed explicitly for K-12 use.

LCPS already limits access to applications that are not required or recommended for learning to the greatest extent possible on LCPS-issued devices.

Please be aware that your student’s permissions will be different according to their elementary, middle or high school level and your opt-in will apply to their school level.

There is no action needed now; however, this fall, when you complete the Online Verification process for your student(s), you will see a box to opt your student in for these third-party applications for their use in learning.

We anticipate that some families will not “Opt In,” resulting in some students not having access to these Google resources. Teachers are currently planning alternative resources to offer students; however, if these third-party resources are needed, parents/guardians can easily update their preferences for their student(s)’ access. Simply return to your ParentVue account at any time, and update the choice. The LCPS technology department is working on implementing an efficient process so that students can use these services the day after consent is received.

If you have questions, please read the posted Frequently Asked Questions or visit the list of LCPS-approved software below.
