                          Welcome!

As the English Department Chair, I'd like to welcome you to Broad Run High School.  We have a strong, committed department, and I am excited to be a part of it.  This year, I am teaching English 12 Dual Enrollment (NOVA: ENGLISH 111 and 112) .

I believe that English is one of the most important classes a high school student will take.  My challenge in each class is twofold.  First, I want to introduce students to quality pieces of literature in order to explore their themes, their forms, their historical frameworks, and their relevance to us today.  Second, I want to help students communicate effectively in today's world through both an awareness of and practice in narrative, expository, and persuasive composition.  To this end, I will guide the students towards improving their writing through various composition assignments in addition to revision, editing, grammar, and vocabulary.

Regarding my education and past teaching experiences,  I earned my Bachelor's degree in Literature from Wheaton College (Wheaton, Illinois), and my Master's degree in English from the University of Chicago (Chicago, Illinois).  I have taught just about every class and level of high school English since beginning my teaching career in 1981.  Before coming to Loudoun County Public Schools, I taught in Illinois, Maryland, and Fairfax County, Virginia.  I also taught several semesters of College Composition  (ENG 111) at Northern Virginia Community College (Alexandria Campus).  Besides teaching, I worked for several years overseeing the children's education at my church.

My husband and I have lived in Ashburn since 1993.  Our daughters both attended the University of Virginia. Our older daughter earned her M.A. at Cornell University, and our younger daughter is finishing her graduate degree at Regis University in Denver.  In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, gardening, decorating, hiking, and reading every chance I can get!
