• Welcome to the Broad Run High School Debate & Speech Team!

WE ARE COMPETING THIS YEAR — 2020/21 COMPETITION AND PRACTICES WILL BE ONLINE

    Broad Run Debate & Speech
“Don't raise your voice, improve your argument."

Our goals are to develop an automatic skepticism in our students, leading to inquiry into all perspectives of issues, debate within and without the student, and self-assessment through more skepticism. Joining our community means becoming part of a critical thinking and speaking tradition that goes back decades at Broad Run.
(This ballot is from a Policy debate round in 1979, with the team of Laura Gonlet and Patti Weaver arguing the Negative.)

Our New Member Interest Meeting is September 1, Tuesday, at 6:30 pm. Competitors and parents are welcome.

The meeting will be virtual — REGISTER HERE for the meeting so we can provide you with the information on how to participate.
(Our team Kick-Off Meeting for returning and new members is Friday, September 4, at 5:30 pm — registration information will be provided here soon.)

Practices will start in mid-September and tournaments begin the second week of October.

INFORMATION ABOUT OUR DEBATE AND SPEECH EVENTS

Bear in mind for Speech events, not all are offered at every tournament and rules may vary.

Debaters and speakers are welcome to compete in more than one event (e.g., many Congressional Debaters also compete in Speech Extemporaneous Speaking), although most find concentrating in one area is key to a rewarding experience (also, schedules at some tournaments may preclude double-entry). It's also not unusual for competitors to switch paths during their high school careers.

     * If you are interested in determining your eligibility for fee reduction, complete this form and give it to your coach.
