Hello Kindergarten Families,
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you and your child to kindergarten. My name is Mrs. Armstrong and I am a New York native. I grew up in Sayville, Long Island and went to college at St. Bonaventure University. My husband and I live in Landsdowne and have four grown children. This will be my 24th year teaching and eleventh year in kindergarten. During my career, I have taught in a myriad of environments ranging from Montessori, Private Schools, Gifted & Talented, Special Education and regular education classes. Each opportunity has helped me develop creative ways to work with and inspire all children to learn and to take responsibility for their learning.
Notable highlights in my eareer include participating in the WordMasters Challenge, a national competition for students in grades 3-8 that encourages growth in vocabulary and verbal reasoning. For 3 consecutive years my students earned the highest honors and scored in the top ten nationally in each of those years. I also had the honor of being nominated for the Agnes Myer Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award in 2012-2013 by a supportive and enthusastic community of former and current parents here at Hillside Elementary School.
I'm committed to the ideal of lifelong learning and have attended a number seminars and classes with the goal of further developing my ability to help my students grow educationally, emotionally and socially. This summer I attended a conference entitiled: Reading Workshop, along with 200 other LCPS collegues, taught by the professors of The Teachers College at Columbia University. I have introduced a number of strategies from the conference and have seen a marked improvement in student enthusiasm for and performance in reading comprehension.
My goal this school year is to provide an academic program that promotes excellence and success for each student. Kindergarten is an exciting time for children - a time of discovery and exploration. I want your child to experience happiness and success at Hillside and believe that you play a key role in our classroom. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, you can reach me at my email address below.
I look forward to working with you and your child this school year.
