Attention 8th Grade Academic Decathlon Team Members:  There is a Meeting on Thursday, April 20th after school in Lab 1.  Please be present and pick up your t-shirt.  Reminder: The competition is THIS Saturday at 8:15am at Eagle Ridge Middle School.  Please see Mrs. Jackson in Lab 1 if you have any questions or conflicts.

 

Attention Leos: Thursday, April 20 will be our general meeting for all members after school in the library.  We still have several projects and events to organize and need all members help. Please sign up ASAP on the Leo Club website if you are working a concession shift for the Talent Show this Friday, April 21. The Leo Club will be selling concessions at intermission, before and after the Talent Show.  Please help support the March of Dimes and purchase water and snacks on Friday, April 21.

 

Join Ms. Welty's 6th grade art classes Thursday April 20th for a student art exhibit designed to raise awareness for the many faces of animal cruelty. This fun event will feature animals from Homeward Trails Animal Rescue. Money will be raised through the sales of student artwork, a raffle, and a silent auction. Cash or check only. 100% of the proceeds will go to local animal rescue organizations. All students must be accompanied by an adult. We look forward to seeing you there!

German Club meets on Wednesday after school in room B7. Come join the fun as we discuss German Easter traditions and plan for our Busch Gardens field trip.

All staff and students: continue to bring in your old glasses to be recycled by the Lions Club International.  Your glasses can be a life changer for someone in the U.S. or around the world allowing him or her to attend school or find better employment because of their improved vision.  The Leo Club is accepting all donations of prescription glasses throughout April.  Collection boxes are in each house area, the main lobby or a Leo advisors’ classroom.

·         Hey Stingrays, did you know April is Autism Awareness Month?  This Sunday, April 2nd is World Autism Day.  On Monday, let’s show our support and Light it Up Blue at Stone Hill! Wear as much blue as you can! Yes staff, this means jeans too!

 

·      If you signed up for a Talent Show audition, the audition schedule is posted outside of the Choral 1 room. Check to make sure that your date and time work for you. Auditions begin on Monday after school!

 

·      Are you interested in taking your programming skills to the next level?  There is a new club starting at Stone Hill.  In this SHMS Coding Club, Students will be introduced to a basic understanding in HTML, CSS, and JAVA.  Students will participate in a variety of coding-related projects, such as graphics and learning how to create a website.  This club will be led by Mrs. Crissman joined by two Rock Ridge High School students from 8-8:30 a.m. weekly on Tuesdays.  Note that in order to participate, students will need to be driven to school on club days, in order to begin promptly at 8am.  Students must be able to make all club dates in order to participate.  Club dates are tentatively scheduled for the following dates:  4/4, 4/18, 4/25, 5/2, 5/9, 5/16, 5/23, 5/30.  The club has 30 seats – first come; first serve.  See Mrs. Crissman in Lab 2 for a permission slip and more information.

·     Attention Leo Club members:  There are still openings for the community service trip to the Lions Club eyeglass recycling center in Arlington on Saturday, April 1 from 10-12:30.  Permission slips can be obtained and returned to Mrs. Williams in room C-1 or Mrs. Jensen in room A17A.  Two parents are willing to drive other students if you need a ride- check with your advisors.  There is NO MEETING on Thursday, March 30.  The next general meeting for all members will be Thursday, April 6 in the library.

·     Cake Decorating Club for Group 3 meets after school today in room Art 1.

 

·     This afternoon students will gather from band, orchestra, guitar and chorus at Rock Ridge HS school and perform in a HUGE CLUSTER CONCERT at 6:15. Choir students from each of the feeder elementary schools will sing, and High School band, orchestra, chorus, and guitar students will join together in a HUGE GRAND FINALE.  Come out and hear it if you are in the area!

 

·     GUITAR SHIRTS are on final clearance for $10 per shirt, adult sizes only. See Mrs. Lanham or a guitar student to reserve your size before they sell out! (available for teacher purchase too, in House B workroom)

If you have not received a decision letter from AET and you believe that you should have, please contact AET directly at 571-252-1970. 8th grade students who made it through to Round 2 of the AOS admission process: Decision letters notifying students in the finalist round of their admission decision were mailed on Monday March 20, 2017.    The letters were mailed to the address provided on the student application.  Please be reminded that mail delivery may take several days within Loudoun County.  If students have not received a letter by Friday March 24, please direct them to call the AOS office at 571-434-4470.  No admission decisions will be released over the phone or via email.

·        Attention 7th grade students: Tickets to the 7th grade dance are on sale each morning this week beginning at 8:10 in the cafeteria.  The dance is this Friday, March 24 from 5-7 p.m. and tickets are $10.  

·        Attention Students:  Thanks to one of our 6th grade students who earned enough PBIS rays, we will have a spirit day this Friday, March 24th.  The theme will be Neon Colors Twins day. As always, dress must be school appropriate and no pajamas.

Members who are joining us to volunteer at Mobile Hope on Saturday, March 25 can get a permission slip on the Leo Club web site or from an advisor.   Hand in permission slips at the 3/16 meeting or to Mrs. Williams in C-1 or Mrs. Jensen in A17A.

Last year's popular black and white design is available for only $10 and is available in adult sizes Small, Medium and Large. (e-mail Mrs. Lanham to purchase). This is a great way to support students in Stone Hill's music department!

·        Thursday's Winter Guitar Concert will start at 7:00 pm, all staff and students are invited to attend.  This is a great time for staff and students to purchase a guitar shirt! Last year's popular black and white design is available for only $10 and is available in adult sizes Small, Medium and Large. This season there have been many wonderful Stone Hill musical concerts, and there are still performances and rehearsals being held on stage. This afternoon is a very important rehearsal for all GREEN Chorus 6 students.  At the end of the day, Mrs. Lanham will meet her Choral students in the front of the auditorium.  The music students should sign -in and sit by row in order to receive a grade for this required rehearsal. Second bus call students could really help out by remaining seated quietly while the choral students get settled.  For many it is the first time they have been on stage.  The concert is next week. Today's rehearsal will end at 4:30 p.m.  

 

In celebration of Stone Hill's TENTH year, we will be hosting a Power 10 challenge between all three grade levels.  The grade which gains the most collective points between now and May will earn a grade-wide party on the evening of Friday, May 19th, complete with games and dancing! The first Power 10 challenge is coming on up Tuesday, January 10th!  On Tuesday, we will be hosting a CLASS COLOR day.  Every student who participates in the CLASS COLOR CHALLENGE will earn a point for their grade level.  5th block teachers will be tallying points in their classes. Come in and show your spirit!  Happy ten years, Stone Hill!

Spelling Club will not meet on Monday. 

 

On December 14th after school the 7th grade OTTW Shark Tank project reached its’ culmination.  Round #3, was judged by Rock Ridge High School students, who are taking business management and or are members of DECA or FBLA. RRHS judges were judging 4 winners from A Day History teachers and 5 winners from B Day History teachers which were select in round #2 from each block.  Using strict criteria and personal judgement, the RRHS Sharks picked two winners. The A day winning product was Relax Pack, a messaging back pack for stressed students. The B day winning product was KIGSSHOE a shoe that grows with your child.  When asked why these two products were selected, RRHS Shark Judges said, “They were unique, eye catching and were able to answer any questions we asked”. Winners received first place medals, an inflatable shark and #1 bragging rights in the 7th grade house showcase.

The Leo Club is helping to sponsor the Toys for Joy toy drive to benefit families in our local schools who may not receive many gifts this holiday season due to family financial struggles.  You can help put a smile on a teen’s face this holiday by donating a gift appropriate for a middle schooler or high schooler.  Bring the NEW and UNWRAPPED gift to school and place it in the box in the main lobby by the auditorium.  The drive ends December 1st.

We will also create a school-wide "unity chain" during Resource on Wednesday and Thursday. National Bullying Prevention Month is a campaign in the United States founded in 2006 by the PACER National Bullying Prevention Center. The campaign is held during the month of October and unites communities nationwide to educate and raise awareness of bullying prevention. Have you ever felt like the whispers, giggles, note passing, and looks were directed at you or someone you care about? Imagine if all that attention was channeled into positive action! This month at Stone Hill, we’ll be working with you, the students and staff, to identify ways in which we can have a positive impact on each other and our community at large. The time to take action is now! Everyone has a voice in raising awareness…Think about what actions you can take today!

DAILY ANNOUNCEMENTS 10/4/16

 

October is Bullying Awareness Month and Stone Hill has a number of things planned in recognition of this effort:

1.      Students are encouraged to participate in our poster contest. Resource teachers and counselors have flyers regarding the contest. We’ll be displaying your posters around the school in order to promote Stone Hill as a safe, caring environment. There are prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place!

2.      We’ll be reading quotes over the announcements throughout the month of October. The quotes will be written and read by you! Again, the flyer with details on this are located in resource. Ask your teacher or counselor for a copy. We are looking for students to write a few sentences about how to stop bullying, how to foster a positive climate at SH, or the steps we can take to make a positive impact on those around us. You write it and read it!

3.      World Unity Day – October 19th – Wear Orange…The counselors have an activity planned for World Unity day planned for resource classes on October 19th and October 20th. More details to follow!

4.      Bullying Lessons for all grade levels will take place over the next few weeks in English classes.

5.      Boo Out Bullying Decoration Contest – Brainstorm some possibilities with your teacher for outside his/her classroom. Ask if you can help decorate!

School Pictures – Victor O’Neill Studios will be here at SHMS on Monday, September 19th and Tuesday, September 20th for our fall pictures. ALL pictures will be taken during PE blocks.  Payment is due on picture day. Order forms were sent home with first day packets. **UPDATE:  Photographer will also be onsite at RRHS to take pictures of our 8th staff and students.

Yearbook cover design contest! Create a cover for this year's yearbook. Requirements are:

- Must say Stone Hill Middle School

- Must include the year 2016-2017

- Has to be on 8 1/2 x 11" paper

- Must be colorful

- Sign your name on bottom right hand corner

All entries are due to Ms. Struder in Art 2 by OCTOBER 1 (no late entries will be accepted).  Look for the fliers in the hallway!

 

 

 

 
DAILY ANNOUNCEMENTS 9/15/16

 

Math counts will meet after school TODAY in the cafeteria.  Only students who have pre-registered are allowed to attend.

 

There will be a Thomas Jefferson HS information night for interested parents and students on September 15th at 7pm in the Stone Hill auditorium.

 

School Pictures – Victor O’Neill Studios will be here at SHMS on Monday, September 19th and Tuesday, September 20th for our fall pictures. ALL pictures will be taken during PE blocks.  Payment is due on picture day. Order forms were sent home with first day packets. **UPDATE:  Photographer will also be onsite at RRHS to take pictures of our 8th staff and students.
