Jo Ellen Sholl will be teaching one class of Journalism I, one section of Newspaper and three sections of Yearbook this year.
Ms. Sholl earned her Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Education with an emphasis in English and scholastic journalism from the University of Missouri. In the fall of 2006, she earned professional certification through the Journalism Education Association. Her certification was renewed in 2011 and 2016.
This is her 22nd year of teaching (five years in Texas and 17 years in Virginia), and Ms. Sholl has experience teaching all levels of English and advising student publications such as newspaper, yearbook, and literary magazine. She is endorsed by the states of Virginia and Texas to teach English and Journalism. She also leads sessions at the VAJTA State Conference in the spring and has spoken at the JEA/NSPA High School Journalism Conference. She critiques yearbooks and newspapers for the National Scholastic Press Association as well.
In addition to teaching journalism and advising publications, Ms. Sholl also has experience teaching English, Photography, and Reading.
Under her direction, SBHS yearbooks and newspapers have earned Trophy Class ratings. The 2011 and 2012 Epic earned an All-American designation from NSPA and the last five yearbooks have been featured prominently in Herff Jones' Ideas that Fly publication which highlights exemplary yearbook designs. Several students have achieved recognition in state and national write-off contests.
