Meet Your PrincipalBrenda Jochems
Welcome to Frances Hazel Reid (FHR) Elementary School and thank you for visiting our website. I am very fortunate and grateful to be leading a school with an incredible staff and a very enthusiastic parent base that consistently works collaboratively with us to provide our children with fun and engaging learning experiences.
We are committed as a staff to constantly assessing and improving our efforts in providing a rigorous curriculum by utilizing best teaching practices to improve the academic achievement of all children.
Come visit and ask our children what they most enjoy about our school. Some of the responses that have been shared with me include (in no particular order): my teacher, math, creating and selling goods (a Project Based Learning experience), art, the Monarch garden (a Project Based Learning experience), blue tickets (PBIS - Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports), reading, BINGO (thanks PTA), my friends, the school play, music, history, recess, Football Math, PE, the parent volunteers, Veterans' Day program, the variety show, lunch (no, I’m not making that response up), assemblies, chicks (a Project Based Learning experience), Songbirds, field trips, creating cat toys for the shelter (a Project Based Learning experience) and squid day.
Research consistently shows the importance of a positive attitude and developing good relationships with others in the learning process. Our school counselors work collaboratively with parents, staff, and students alike in leading our school in our Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) program. Our staff does a fabulous job of cheerfully greeting each other, visitors, and our students each day and is very successful in turning frowns upside down very quickly.
I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a degree in elementary education and taught various grade levels in different school districts for fourteen years. I earned a graduate degree from the University of Maryland in school counseling and served as an elementary school counselor for four years. I then earned my administrative endorsement from the University of Virginia and served as an assistant principal at Lowes Island Elementary School prior to becoming the principal at Frances Hazel Reid. I have been the principal of FHR since 2009. My husband and I live in Leesburg and are blessed with two beautiful girls, graduates of LCPS.
Communication is essential in providing the best for your child(ren). We will communicate with you when we have celebrations as well as concerns to share. We ask that you do the same. My goal is to work with each student, staff member, and parent in order to provide the best possible experience for each of our children. I welcome phone calls, emails, and visits to talk through any concerns that parents may have. I am also very appreciative of the words of encouragement that I receive as well in our continuous efforts in providing the best for your children.
We are excited about being "Stronger Together" as we rebuild from a pandemic. Our theme for the 2021-2022 school year is We Are Stronger Together and we are focusing on fitness and overall unity. We tie in our PBIS 3 Rs with our theme each year. The 3 Rs are Respect, Responsibility, and Relationships.
Respectfully,
Brenda
