Mr. Kevin Shirk
I am thrilled to be starting my first year with LCPS at Trailside Middle School. Prior to coming to Trailside, I taught middle school mathematics for 14 years in Frederick County Public Schools in Winchester, VA. In addition to teaching, I also coached the Millbrook High School Cross Country and Track & Field teams for the past ten years, helping guide the athletes there to numerous district, region, and state titles.
A Pittsburgh native, I earned my degree in Elementary Education from Duquesne University and now hold endorsements in Elementary K-6, Middle School Mathematics 6-8, Algebra, and even Health & PE K-12.
As I begin my Trailside career, I look forward to inspiring our 7th grade Timberwolves to make their own discoveries in mathematics by implementing a multitude of teaching strategies: hands-on manipulatives, interactive technology, collaboration, and discourse. Ultimately, my goal is for my students to confidently apply what we learn in the classroom to their lives outside of the classroom.
When not at Trailside, I call Winchester home along with my wife and my two sons, Miles (6) and Drew (3). Together, my family likes to ride our bikes, take hikes in the local parks, or just play outside. One of my main hobbies is distance running, having raced everything from the mile through the marathon. My other fun hobby is that I like to collect, repair, restore, and play classic arcade games and pinball machines.
While the 20'-21' school year will certainly start in a unique way, I believe that together we can make it our best!
