Mr. Kevin Shirk
I am thrilled to be in my 3rd year at Trailside Middle School. I have taught middle school math for 17 years and am proud to call Trailside my home! In addition to teaching, I am also the head coach of Cross Country and Track & Field at Loudoun Valley High School.
A Pittsburgh native, I earned my degree in Elementary Education from Duquesne University and now hold endorsements in Elementary K-6, Middle School Mathematics 6-8, Algebra 1, and even Health & PE K-12.
I hope to inspiring our 7th- and 8th-grade Timber Wolves to make their own discoveries in mathematics by implementing a multitude of teaching strategies: hands-on manipulatives, interactive technology, collaboration, and discourse. Ultimately, my goal is for my students to confidently apply what we learn in the classroom to their lives outside of the classroom.
Interestingly, I'm not the only Shirk at Trailside as my wife is one of our fine arts teachers at TMS. It's great to be in the same school together and share all of our great experiences as Timber Wolves!
When not at Trailside, the Shirks call Winchester, VA, our home along with our two sons, Miles (8) and Drew (5). Together, my family likes to ride our bikes, take hikes in the local parks, or just play outside. One of my main hobbies is distance running, having raced everything from the mile through the marathon and I even won a USA national title in the one-mile for the Masters (40+ years old) division. My other fun hobby is that I like to collect, repair, restore, and play classic arcade games and pinball machines.
I believe that together we can make 22-23 our best year yet!
