    Virginia School Counseling Standards

    Mission Statement

    The mission of school counseling services is to ensure all schools provide a comprehensive, inclusive, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive counseling program that assesses the strengths and needs of all students, staff, and the community.

    Vision Statement

    Students will be empowered through an academic, college and career, and personal-social multi-tiered system of supports that ensures all students are prepared and have access to the knowledge and skills necessary to be resilient, critical thinkers, communicators, collaborators, creators, and contributors to the world.

    Beliefs Statements

    • The School Counselors’ primary purpose is to advocate for the student;
    • School Counselors adhere to the standards for school counseling programs in Virginia Public Schools and to the American School Counselor Association’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice;
    • The School Counseling Program is a critical component within the school system and is integral to the academic, personal/social, and career development and progress of each student;
    • The School Counseling Program helps build a positive school environment by encouraging collaboration among counselors, teachers, administrators, parents/guardians and the community to further student achievement;
    • The School Counseling program is inclusive, culturally competent, and developmentally appropriate to help support all students;
    • The School Counseling Program is in alignment with the American School Counselor Association Model (ASCA);
    • The comprehensive School Counseling Program is continuously refined and improved through systemic review and evaluation data

    Academic, Career and Personal/Social Support

    School counselors are licensed educators with the minimum of a Master's degree in School Counseling and are uniquely qualified to address the academic, career, and personal/social needs of all students. By designing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive school counseling program, school counselors serve to promote and enhance student success.
