My name is Kara Haakonson and I am excited to join Frederick Douglass as a reading specialist!
This will be my 19 year in education, teaching the past four years in Loudoun County. Prior to Loudoun, I taught for nine years in my home town of Spotsylvania, Virginia as a first and second grade teacher. I also taught in Fairfax County for five years as a second grade teacher and as a reading specialist.
I received my Bachelor's degree in elementary education from Radford University (GO HIGHLANDERS) and my Master's degree in curriculum and instruction with a specialization in reading instruction from George Mason University.
When I am not in the classroom, I enjoy spending time with my husband, my daughter Clarke, and our black lab named Dixie. In my free time I enjoy relaxing at my family’s lake house on Lake Gaston, shopping, and doing home improvement projects. I am thrilled to be a part of the Frederick Douglas family!
