Dr. Benjamin Overcash

Hello, Timblerwolves! I'm Dr. Overcash, and I'm thrilled to enter my third year as a 6th grade History teacher at Trailside and a proud member of the Pack!

For much of the last decade, I've been privileged to teach history and ancient languages to students from middle school through university in Australia and the USA, and I'm delighted to continue my vocation as an educator at Trailside. I received my Ph.D. in Ancient History from Macquarie University (Sydney, Australia), and also hold graduate and undergraduate degrees in Secondary Education, Ancient History, and Religion. Although I am an ancient historian by training, I love teaching US history, and I believe that I have the most important job in the world! I'm honored and humbled to have recently been named the 2021 Virginia History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

Although I call North Carolina home, my second home is Sydney, where I lived, worked, and studied for nearly a decade, and ultimately became a proud US–Aussie dual national. I returned to North Carolina in 2016, and in 2019 I packed up and moved once again with my husband, Cameron (who recently finished his graduate program in Political Science at American University), to begin our new adventure in this beautiful and historic area of our nation's capital!

When I'm not teaching, I'm usually reading, cooking, travelling, creating, or playing Mario Party. I also try to remain active in scholarship in my field, and when I have the time, I continue to research, write, and publish (which you can learn more about here).
