- Mrs Bruton
Good afternoon, Students and Parents/Guardians.
I write to you as we face this unprecedented air of eeriness together. My keyword here is: together. I want to let you know that I will receive more information via an update from the county later this week (possibly early next) where they will give admin and teachers directives.
As of right now, students are encouraged to complete any missing work from before we left on March 12th and treat that as part of the Quarter 3 grade. Any work that was due after March 12th should be noted, but is in limbo until we know more from the county as to Q4 expectations.
On Google Classroom, you will soon see a folder posted called “Continuity of Education” - inside this folder you will see Hyperdocs with lessons to enrich and continue to provide you/your student with practice for English Language Arts (Reading, Composition, Analysis..etc). Every LCPS teacher is being asked to create this document and post it by March 27th. The work might look slightly different from teacher to teacher, but I wanted to let you know what you could expect from me. I’m a planner, so I’m working on the front end of this to plan out everything I possibly can. These lessons are not mandatory and will not be graded summatively. But I will provide opportunities for students to engage, self-assess, and get feedback from me that will benefit them no matter what comes of our current school year.
One of my greatest joys in this career is the nature of our relationships. This job would simply just not be the same without the face-to-face interaction that it entails. Right now, 2020 is giving us a huge curveball, and a lot of things are up in the air (for example, College Board/SATs/AP testing, state testing, when will school go back in session, what developments will take place in the next two weeks, etc…). When the future is uncertain, it is easy to panic. My goal is to keep in touch with you and provide updates as I get them.
Most of all, I look forward to seeing all of you again. We did not get to say “See you later” and it was difficult to wake up and not know what the future would bring. I will miss all of your personalities and the daily shenanigans we partake in, until we (hopefully!) see each other, again!
Feel free to email me if you need anything.
Cute dog memes, puns, and Netflix recommendations are also appreciated.
As always, be safe and make good choices.

Hello Falcon Family!
- My name is Catherine Bruton "Caly" or Mrs B (for most of my students) and while I am brand new to Briar Woods HS staff, I have been a part of the family for a little over a year. My husband is on staff as an HPE teacher and coaches the football team - GO FALCONS! I previously taught English and ELL in Prince William County and am entering my 4th year of teaching. My husband, Daniel, and I have 3 children ages 9, 6, and 4. We have been so happy this past year joining this community with our coach and are even more excited to now live in the area. I greatly look forward to teaching in the building this year and continuing to get to know the staff, students, and community here at Briar Woods.
