Degrees and Certifications:

Mr. Bret Spencer

I am honored and excited for my fifth year as Dean at Smart's Mill Middle School.  This is my seventh year in Loudoun County.  I graduated college from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown with a degree in Secondary Mathematics and I have since completed a Masters Program through Shenandoah Universtity in Administration and Supervision.   I worked as a Math Teacher in Warren County, VA 2008 - 2014 and also taught as a Math Teacher 2014 – 2016 at Trailside Middle School in Ashburn.

I am originally from Elderton, Pennsylvania, which is a small town in Southwestern Pennsylvania.  I moved to Virginia after completing my studies at UPJ along with my wife. We have two wonderful children - Sadie and Gemma.  We are all HUGE Steeler fans.  When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my family, watching my kids participate in activities, and I have recently started painting.  I also have been a high school coach for Football, Golf, and Baseball prior to moving to Loudoun County.

I hope to make your children's experiences at Smart's Mill Middle School beneficial and help them successfully progress through middle school.  I have experience implementing the Blended Learning model of instruction in my mathematics classrooms for my last two years in the classroom.  I am a big supporter of Personalized Learning, Project Based Learning, and Performance Assessments.  As a teacher, I wanted to help my students learn the content that I taught in as many ways possible, as they may be the most important for their future success in mathematics.  The problem-solving processes learned in Foundations, Algebra I and Geometry will be vital for their future mathematics courses.  As an administrator, I hope to continue using my classroom experiences to help the students and teachers at Smart's continue to successfully incorporate the Personalized Learning teaching strategies into their lessons and classwork.  I hope to help make the students' time in the classroom full of positive and valuable learning experiences.
