This information will also be added to the LCPS MAP Webpage for Parents. Please contact Nicole Akers, the Math Supervisor or your school if you have any questions regarding the math placement process.

Weekly Update #14 (week of Nov. 25)

    Good afternoon Simpson families!

We had a remarkable week full of celebrations, and ended the week with a great volleyball match against Smarts Mill Saturday night. Here is a brief recap:

    1. We celebrated over 800 students who were recognized for their academic accomplishments for quarter one. We held three morning ceremonies followed by waffles and tasty toppings!
    2. We had our first volleyball pep-rally in which our sixth and seventh grade students were able to see the amazing skills from our three volleyball teams!
    3. We had a convincing win against Smarts Mill, winning three out of four sets! All of our student teams won, but our faculty fell slightly short of our goals to sweep the night. Regardless of the outcome, it was awesome to see so many families join us to support our school and students.
    4. We were also incredibly thankful to our parents for your support during American Education Week! Our staff appreciated all the treats and nice words!

Here is what you need to know this week:

    1. No School on Wednesday, November 27, through Friday, November 29.

Our school will be closed during these dates.

    1. Future PTO events and dates:
    • Spirit Day at Hogback Mountain Paintball - Sunday, December 8;
    • PTO meeting - Monday, December 9;
    • Simpson Robotics competition - Saturday, December 14
    • Spirit Day at Souvlaki Bar festive Greek- Monday, December 18
    1. Insensitive Comments at Simpson - Concern

I wanted to alert you to what has now been a small, yet burgeoning concern over the past few weeks. Our staff has become aware of multiple incidents in which students have used derogatory terms (to include ethnic slurs, images, and comment about student's sexuality) openly in our building and on our buses. Once administration became aware of these incidents, we have dealt with them on an individual basis in our hope to deal with the immediacy of the issue. As we have spoken to students involved with these comments, we have come to learn that the use of these derogatory terms might be more widespread than we originally thought.

Here is how you can help:

Please have a conversation with your child about what s/he may be hearing on our buses, and in our school.

Encourage your child to report any concern s/he may have to an adult. Now that our students have an LCPS email account, any student can email anyone that s/he trusts to relay his/her concern. Students can always email me at lenny.compton@lcps.org, and I will work with my team to address the concern.

Please assure your child that his/her name will not be used in any follow-up from the stated concern.

Please relay to your child that this behavior should not - and will not- be condoned at school, as school should be a safe space for all students, both emotionally and physically.

What the school will do/has done:

This past Friday, I made an announcement to the student body alerting everyone of this concern, and reiterating that school is not a place for such comments and/or terms. I also encourage staff to converse with their classes about the thoughtlessness of such comments.

Prior to our January's PTO meeting, I will host a community conversation on this topic in hopes to understand what parents are hearing, as well as to invite ideas from parents regarding how we can partner to combat this behavior.

    1. Please consider supporting Simpson!

We are so thankful for the families who have donated to our Money for Mustangs campaign. To date, we have been able to:

    • Purchase new furniture for our library;
    • Purchase outdoor tables and trash cans for our students to use and enjoy;
    • Provide a waffle breakfast for every possible recipient on the honor roll for quarter one;
    • Support student lunches on field trips for those families that may experience a financial burden;
    • Provide our staff with a Thanksgiving lunch to show them how much we are thankful for them!

All of this is possible because of your support (which is also tax-deductible!). Thank you for your consideration!

If you would like to financially support our goals, please use this link:

We hope our students and families have a restful Thanksgiving break!

    Enjoy your week!

Weekly Update #12 (week of Nov. 11)

    Good afternoon Simpson Families!

There is so much going on at Simpson in the coming days, so here is a brief update on events and important information!

The majority of our 7th graders will attend the field trip tomorrow, and the weather will be cold! Parents, please make sure your students dress appropriately! Students will leave at 9 am and return at 2:30 pm. If you have any questions about the trip, please contact Ms. Winsor at beth.winsor@lcps.org

    2. Veteran's Day Program at 10 am November 11
Our 8th grade students have been practicing their Veteran's Day program for the last week. Parents who attend should be impressed! We look forward to showing how much we appreciate ALL of those who have served our country.  The program starts at 10 am.

    3. Grades will be public tomorrow (November 11)
Parents should be able to access first quarter graders tomorrow, November 11, after 9 am. If you ever have questions about grades, please contact the teacher directly, or email the grade level counselor. You can find counselor contact information at this link: Simpson's Fabulous Counselors!

    5. PTO meeting - Monday, November 11, 7 pm
Please join us in the library for our November's PTO meeting.

    6. Book Fair is this week!!

Our library will be opened until 7 pm on Monday so parents can visit and purchase books. You can find more information about the book fair (and the books that students can purchase) at this link:
    Awesome books to choose from!

    7. Clubs within the Day start Wednesday!
Starting Wednesday, students will spend the last 30 minutes of our day in a club of their choosing! This is our second year implementing this, and we know students will LOVE connecting with individuals who may have a similar interest. There are over 49 clubs that students chose from, so everyone should have found one of the offerings interesting. The majority of our clubs were driven by student interests.

    8. Last Winter Sports Club Meeting- Tuesday, November 12 at 6:30 pm

For any questions about WSC, please contact Ms. Bolyard at laura.bolyard@lcps.org

    9. Adjustments to Advisory and Schedule

Our new schedule can be viewed in this link:

    New Schedule.

We've considered a number of factors to this adjustment, but students gain about three minutes per class.

There have been a few community questions about advisory. Advisory is a critical component of middle school, but our staff needs more time to answer this question:  How can we collaboratively increase the level of investment from students, staff and families through a compelling advisory program that yields the desired results of connections, character building, and community contribution? We will be have ongoing dialogue throughout the remainder of the year in an effort to bring an even more meaningful and impacting program for our students next year.

We will invite parents to join us for a community conversation about advisory in the coming months.

    10. Join us at our Volleyball game vs Smarts Mill!

Our match is on Saturday, November 11th. Tickets are $5 are proceeds support our PTO! We plan to officially win this year!

    November at a glance:

    November 18-22 American Education Week

November 18 - AEW Kickoff Concert, 9:30 am

November 23 - Volleyball game at Tuscarora High School

    November 27-29 Holiday Break

Looking forward to a great week!

Weekly Update #11 (Week of November 6)

    Good afternoon Mustang Families!

We have moved to another system of communication called Blackboard Notification. This is my first opportunity at using this format which offers so many additional features. So please be patient as I learn and utilize this format.

Here is what you need to know this week:

    1. A Place to Be Visits us Wednesday, November 6 (6th grade only)

All sixth graders will see the following play: Same Sky Project (link). Viewers are asked to complete a pre and post survey about the show. If you do not want your sixth grader to participate in the anonymous survey, please complete the following form:

    Opt out Survey

When this group came last year, our students LOVED the show. We know the show will help students understand how we are all members of one community, and they will be inspired by the performers who "advocate for and promote messages of empathy, love, inclusion, acceptance and inspiration through music."

7th and 8th grade students will view the play on February 11th.

    2. Changes in Bell Schedule for Second Quarter

Clubs during the day will start in mid-November! We know so many of our students are excited about the opportunity to join individuals with similar interests, and this year should will be even more enriching as last year, our first year with clubs during the day. Clubs During the Day will happen every Wednesday, so to appropriately support the reduction of instructional time, we have eliminated advisory for the remainder of the year.

We will still embed time for students to connect with teachers throughout the year, however Clubs During the Day offers us the greatest return on those student-teacher connections.

Students had an opportunity to choose from over 45 clubs! We will provide the list of clubs to you once rosters are finalized.

We will publish the new schedule- to start on November 11- in next week's update.

    3. Come have fun with the PTO!

Monday, Nov. 4 from 7-9pm.  Spirit night at Atomic Trampoline for 6th & 7th grade

Friday, Nov. 15 from 7:30-9:30pm.  Spirit night at Atomic Trampoline for 8th grade

    4. Join us for the Crosstown Volleyball Game!

We have accepted the challenge from Smarts Mill Middle School! Come join us on November 23 at 6 pm! Tickets will be $5 for admission. Come cheer the team!

    5. Reminders

    Bus Passes:

For those students who are riding a different bus with a friend or family member in the afternoon, we ask parents to follow this protocol:

    a. Make sure a pass is written by a parent. If you need to email the request, it should be sent to the grade level secretary by 12 noon at the latest.

    b. Ideally, students should take the pass to the grade level secretary at the start of the day.

    c. Requests are dependent on the availability of space on a bus. If there is a bus at capacity, bus requests will not be honored.

Take a look at what's going on at Simpson!

    Have a great week!

    Happy Sunday everyone!

I hope you are finding some rest on a rainy day! The fall weather appears to have fully transitioned into our area!

I wanted to invite you all to our first community conversations tomorrow night. Our original intent was to discuss opportunities to enhance our school, but our topic will be about our indoor air quality at Simpson. A number of parents have voiced concerns about the perception of mold at our school, so I would like to have a conversation with all of you about what we have done about those concerns, as well to hear any other concerns you may have about this issue. Pleas consider joining us at 6 pm in the library.

Lastly, I want to give a quick shout out to our entire faculty for the support they showed for the club run this past Friday! It was a cold day, but our staff and students did an amazing job during the run. It was also great to see so many students and staff dress in pink to support breast cancer awareness.

    1. Do you need to see the announcements?

In our ongoing efforts to improve communication, we made a slight adjustment to our announcements. Adults will be present throughout the cafeteria to help foster meaningful conversations.

    WEEKLY MESSAGE #7

A message from J. LUPTON SIMPSON MIDDLE SCHOOL 0020

    Happy Sunday everyone!

This weekend was definitely full of brisk, fall weather! I hope you and your family made time to enjoy it!

Quick thank you to our community:

Want to say a very special thank you to Mr. Garvey and the other parents that built the tables and benches for our kids to enjoy while outside during lunch! The tables have a been a big hit with our students! We hope to purchase at least 10 more!

Also want to say thank you to our community! In one week, our Money for Mustangs increased by $1000! This will allow us to purchase more tables and provide other enhancements to our community. Thank you for your support!

We have a light week, so here are some important things you need to know:

    1. What is going on in your child's classrooms?

Here is the link to our global "what's going on at Simpson," a curriculum guide for parents to stay aware of upcoming dates, content, and useful material.

    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1kBa0ZZEd5LDh-vUXlOQfnxzSFWa01YQ-FCnlxcze6Kc/edit?usp=sharing

Also, we "tweet" a lot about that happenings in our school. You don't need a Twitter account to look at the remarkable activities and learning taken place at Simpson! Use this link for more pictures, videos, and advertisements: https://twitter.com/JLSMS_Official

    1. Update on School's Website

Similarly to the LCPS website, our website will have a total remake in mid-December. We believe that the new platform will be more user-friendly, and much more intuitive than our current website. Only a few schools have transitioned over to the new model. Here is an example of what our might look like from our fellow LCPS school, Willard: https://www.lcps.org/willard

Also, we have a new system for announcements. You can find this under the "announcements" tab on the right of our website. Once you click the link, you should see this: https://lcps-jls.arreya.com/#32387

Please allow a few seconds for the announcements to transition from one to the next.

    1. Money for Mustangs

We have surpassed $5700 of our $30,000 goal!  Our PTO and librarians will be meeting to discuss what our community would like to see from our library.  Coincidentally, one of my close friends is an administrator at a phenomenal middle school in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. I had a chance to visit him over the summer, and he took me to their redesigned library, a hallmark of their school. Take a look at the first 30 seconds of this video. In the next three years, it is our goal to have our library to look just as inviting! https://youtu.be/tl0xrI1PXBE

    WEEKLY MESSAGE #6

A message from J. LUPTON SIMPSON MIDDLE SCHOOL 0020

    Happy Sunday Simpson Families!

I would like to send a congratulations to Team Simpson, over 14 individuals (parents, teachers, students, and family members) who participated in the We are all Human race today at Woodgrove High School. Luckily for me, it was not a timed run! Team Simpson came in first because we had the most participants in the race! That means we will have to defend our title next year! Hope you will consider joining us! For more information about the race, take a look at this link: https://loudounnow.com/2019/09/27/were-all-human-5k-color-run-planned-sunday/

Here is what you need to know this week:

    1. You will have access to interims at the end of the day tomorrow (September 30).

Please review your child's interims tomorrow after 5 pm. Interims are the midpoint grades your child have. This would be a great opportunity to sit with your child, go over all the grades, and ask your child to open his/her google classrooms to review assignments.

If you have any questions about your child's grade, please contact the teacher. All teacher emails are accessible at this link: https://www.lcps.org/site/Default.aspx?PageType=1&SiteID=2628&ChannelID=27435&DirectoryType=6

    1. Clarity on Clubs

We have two types of clubs at Simpson. Our current clubs are all after school clubs, and they meet either on Tuesday or Wednesday when we have late buses. The list of the clubs can be found under our activity tab, also located here: https://www.lcps.org/site/Default.aspx?PageType=1&SiteID=2628&ChannelID=2741&DirectoryType=6

Although these are our current after school clubs, teachers and students can collaborate to make new clubs throughout the year. As an example, last week I received a request for the Harry Potter Club, so that will be added once we understand more about the goals of the club.

Starting in second quarter, we will have "clubs within the day," an opportunity for every student to have a 30 minute weekly connection with students and teachers who have also joined the club. Last year, we had over 46 offerings, from Ping Pong club, to writing club. Students can start clubs (with a teacher sponsor), or join a club from the list of options.

Mr. Filsinger, our 8th grade dean, is diligently designing this process, and will be informing students of what they can do to start a club this week.

Clubs within the day go from second quarter to the end of third quarter, and they will be every Wednesday from 3:05 to the end of school.

    WEEKLY MESSAGE #5

A message from J. LUPTON SIMPSON MIDDLE SCHOOL 0020

    Good evening Simpson families!

By now, our students should be accustomed to the rhythms of Simpson, having learned schedules, school and teacher expectations, and connected with familiar and new friends. During this time, I am working with my team to identify what we did well to start the year, and what we can do to improve the experience of our students.

As a principal, and even more so as a parent, I am also constantly thinking about the teaching and learning of students. Specifically, I wonder what to expect -and what to desire - from the schools of my two boys, ages 3 and soon to be 2. Similarly to our "purpose" at Simpson, I would imagine you want your child to attend a school that provides an exceptional experience, and empowering education, and an expectation for excellence - for students and the adults of the building. These are our goals at Simpson. Just as I would hope of my boy's future principal, you can expect that I will relentless pursue this purpose for you and and your child at Simpson.

I would also like to share a recent article I read that I believe all parents could find beneficial. The author of the article is well-known in the educational sphere for a recent book she wrote called "The Gift of Failure." I think parents could appreciate the three key values she chronicles in this article. It is a good read, especially for middle school parents!  The link is below:

Thanks to one of our community sponsors, Legacy Orthodontics, all of our students received covers for their chromebooks. These covers are the property of the school and should be able to last for at least five years.

    1. Money for Mustangs - Update

We have reached over $4,000 of our $30,000 goal! Thank you to all the families that have supported us! Remember, if everyone contributed at least $30 per student, we would exceed our goal!

Next month, our community conversations will be about the hopes and dreams our parents have for our school, including what parents would like to see if we change the infrastructure of our library, and how we can enhance the exterior of our building. Remember, community conversations are an hour before the PTO meeting. Our next PTO meeting is October 21st.

    WEEKLY UPDATE #4

A message from J. LUPTON SIMPSON MIDDLE SCHOOL 0020

    Happy Sunday Simpson Families!

The weather was magical this weekend! We hope you have enjoyed it!

    Here is your weekly update:

    1. Need to know what is going on in your child's classrooms?

Take a look at our new way of helping parents navigate what is going on in our classrooms. Remember, this does not replace ParentVue of assignments on Google Classroom.

    Here is the link:

    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1kBa0ZZEd5LDh-vUXlOQfnxzSFWa01YQ-FCnlxcze6Kc/edit?usp=sharing

    1. Please come out to support our first Spirit Night! Join us at Five Guys this Tuesday, September 17 from 4 pm to 9 pm

Take the family to Five Guys for a hearty dinner! Mention Simpson and 20% of the proceeds go to our school!

    1. Thank you for your support for Money for Mustangs!!

In our first week, we raised over $3000 towards our $30,000 goal! Every contribution counts! For those who are interested, contributions are tax deductible.

A parent wanted to know our what are some things we would do with the funds. You can access some of the ideas from our back to school night presentation here:

    https://www.lcps.org/site/default.aspx?PageType=3&DomainID=2628&ModuleInstanceID=7235&ViewID=6446EE88-D30C-497E-9316-3F8874B3E108&RenderLoc=0&FlexDataID=343466&PageID=20527

In thinking of environmental responsiveness and accessibility, we would like to purchase four additional water bottle filling stations. Currently, we only have one at the front of the building, but we would like to have one in each house, as well as one close to the gym.

We would also like to purchase hand dryers for our bathrooms in an effort to reduce and/or eliminate our paper towel usage.

    1. Thank you to Mr. Garvey and other families for helping build our outdoor tables!

A group of parents will meet this Wednesday at 4 pm to help us build the six tables we have been able to purchase.

    1. Positivity Project this week: curiosity

This week's topic is curiosity! Ask your students what they are learning about this important trait.

A message from J. LUPTON SIMPSON MIDDLE SCHOOL 0020

    Hello Simpson Families!!

In an effort to improve our communication with our community, we are introducing a weekly bulletin for you to view every Sunday to better understand what your child is learning at Simpson. The link to that bulletin is located here:

We ask that parents be patient with us as we employ this method this year. It does not replace ParentVue (where parents can see grades and posted assignments), or google classroom (where some teacher use to house assignments). It is extremely important to review and acknowledge the first day forms. One of the documents is the acceptable use/responsible use forms, which we ask all parents to complete so that students can receive chromebooks. You can find all documents at this link:

A message from J. LUPTON SIMPSON MIDDLE SCHOOL 0020

    Good evening Simpson Families!

The day is here!! We are ready to welcome our students back for the 2019-20 school year!!

I wanted to send a quick reminder to you about what to expect tomorrow.

    Kiss and Ride Update

    NO LEFT TURN:

The county has installed a no left turn sign during the times of kiss and ride. We will have cones near our stop sign that will ecourage right turns outside of our parking lot. We respectfully ask all kiss and ride parents to adhere to this guideline.

Where to drop off your student:

We only have one kiss and ride loop, so please pull your car to the end of the sidewalk to drop off students. This will allow more cars to access the kiss and ride sidewalk, thereby giving you a faster opportunity to make it to your next destination.

    BUS LOOP concerns:

Remember we have two bus loops - one for the majority of our buses, and one for smaller buses that come from distant places throughout the county. Parents should not use any bus loop unless directed by administration. Students that must use the handicap ramp because of an injury are allowed to use smaller bus loop, however we ask parents to make sure they enter before buses arrive.

    Cell phones

We need your support in helping our students understand that phones will be "away for the day." Phones should be placed in the locker when students arrive, and taken home when students leave.

If you ever need to contact your child, you can call the school, or you can send your child an email using his/her ID #@lcps.org. This communication will go directly to your child's lcps' email account.

Although we are not officially partnering with Away for the Day, the website has some interesting information parents may want to review. You can find it here: https://www.awayfortheday.org/

Activities during the first two days:

Remember we will be incorporating team building activities during the first two days of school for all classes so that students learn they are members of the HERD! Academics will officially start on Monday!

    Security Update:

We have a new Safety and Security Officer (SSO) employed by the county to support us with security protocols. Mr. Stillwell will be visible in and out of the building, supporting students, and greeting parents.

Officer Bennett, our School Resource Officer (SRO) employed by Leesburg police, will be present as well, helping our students earn the "polite badges."

Parents should always report to the main office if they are visiting the school, and they will be greeted by our wonderful front office staff, Ms. Doyle, Ms. Lee, and our newest secretary, Ms. Aguilar.

    Scheduling concerns:

Our fabulous counselors have been hard at work ensuring scheduling is complete. If your child has questions about a schedule, students will be able access counselors throughout the day.

Are you just as excited as we are about tomorrow? We hope so! We can't wait to see our students! Make sure they have practiced their dance moves for music will be playing as they enter our building for a new year!

    See everyone tomorrow!

    Lenny Compton
