Ms. Maher is a Loudoun County native and grew up in the Western Loudoun area. She attended Loudoun Valley High School and had the opportunity to go back and work with her 1st grade teacher as part of her Teacher Cadet Experience. She attended James Madison University for her undergraduate degree in Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies and also for her Master of Arts in Teaching.

Why I wanted to be a teacher:

Ms. Maher has always enjoyed helping out in her local community and it was here that she was inspired to become a teacher. As a JMU student she was a part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization and also with a literacy lab called the Gus Bus. She loved interacting with the students and families while fostering a sense of learning with the student she helped. She says that her favorite part about teaching is, “seeing my students grow as learners and seeing them light up when they finally understand an idea”.

    Favorite Children’s Literature:

Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate Dicamillo

    Hoot by Carl Hiaasen

    Strega Nona by Tomie Depaola

    Favorite Quote:

Have Courage and Be Kind- Cinderella

    Interesting Facts:

Ms. Maher’s has lived in Loudoun for 19 years now with her parents and two younger sisters. They enjoy being part of the community and exploring all Loudoun has to offer. Ms. Maher’s favorite place to be is at the beach with a good book and her family. In her free time Ms. Maher loves baking, reading, and going hiking with her dog Lucy that she adopted from the Loudoun County Animal Shelter.

What I am most excited about for this upcoming year:

Ms. Maher says that she is most excited to get to know the students, families, and staff at Horizon Elementary School. This is her second year as part of the Horizon Comet Community and also her second year as part of the 4th grade team. She loves forming positive and lasting relationships with her students and is excited to involve their families in their learning. She is also excited to use hands on activities and real life connections in her classroom as she and her students explore the 4th grade curriculum.
