Welcome to Eighth Grade English!
Hello! My name is Deb Sheridan, and I’m very excited to return to the River Bend 8th Grade English team this year!
I am originally from Rhode Island and graduated from Boston College. I also graduated from Suffolk University Law School and practiced law in Rhode Island for ten years. We are the proud parents of three children, Sarah, Jason, and Maggie, who range in age from 15 to 23, and all of whom have made their way through the LCPS educational system. We also have one Labrador Retriever, Chloe. After relocating to Virginia, I started my professional "Chapter Two" and earned my Virginia teaching license for Middle School Language Arts through Shenandoah University. For seven years, I taught 8th Grade English at J.L. Simpson Middle School in Leesburg, and I joined the incredible River Bend 8th Grade English team last year.
Personal Philosophy: I am passionate about reading and writing! It is my hope to pass on this enthusiasm to all of my students. It is most important for me to create an engaging and dynamic classroom environment encouraging my students to develop confidence in their reading and writing abiltities. I read Young Adult Literature on a regular basis and discuss books with students every single day. Equally important to me is the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Since this is a life skill which can dramatically and positively impact students personally, academically, and, eventually, professionally, we will approach strong communication skills without fear or anxiety.
Classroom Approach: Our classroom will be a safe and nurturing environment in which students are treated respectively and with kindness. My goal is for students to feel a sense of community each time they work through the door. We will use a workshop model since students need time to practice and develop their reading and writing skills in order to grow. Students will also participate in whole class, small group, and individual activities on a regular basis. Physical movement, access to a wide variety of technology, higher-level analytical skills, collaboration, and reflection will all play a significant role in your child's academic success. Additionally, students will receive constant feedback and guidance through small group and individual conferences on a regular basis.
Communication: Since open and regular communication is extremely important to me, assignments will be posted in Google Classroom and Phoenix, both of which can be accessed from home. My goal is to ensure that parents and students know exactly what is happening in our classroom throughout the year. Parents and students should feel free to email me with any question or concerns at Debra.Sheridan@LCPS.org at any time. Expect to hear back from me within 24 hours or less. I appreciate the importance of this communication and will make every effort to respond promptly and with as much detail as possible.
I can't wait to get to know each of your children on a personal level! Thank you for sharing them with me.
