My name is John O’Brien. I grew up approximately 5 miles south of Boston, as the seagull flies, in the Town of Hull, Massachusetts. My family and I have lived in Northern Virginia for more than 25-years. My wife of 38 years and I are empty nesters, having raised three children two of whom still reside in the Northern Virginia area. I have a degree in political science from Salem State University located in Salem, Massachusetts. I hold certifications in Advanced Performance Management, Advanced Achievement Leadership and as a Certified Professional Coach with an endorsement as a Master Practitioner of the ELI Assessment tool. I have over 17 years of experience working with young people as a USA Hockey Advanced Level Certified Coach.
In 2011, after a successful 32-year career leading print and online publishing companies, I decided to build a second life with the express intention of helping young people launch successful and, fulfilling lives. In 2015, I began substitute teaching in the Loudoun County public schools teaching mostly social studies and science at the high school and middle school levels. During the 2016-2017 school year I served two long-term substitute assignments at River Bend Middle School. The first assignment was teaching 7th grade history and lasted from late September 2016 until early January 2017. Immediately following, I began an assignment that will ended in mid April 2017 as a Special Education teacher, teaching 6th grade math.
I recently completed the Career Switcher program offered through Shenandoah University graduating on June 10, 2017. This program is an alternative route to teaching licensure for those who have had at least five years of work experience, a college degree, and who wish to become teachers. The program may seem concentrated and abbreviated, but it is thorough and challenging.
Unlike some,my second life resulted from a sense of satisfaction with my original career not from a desire to make a mid course career change. I had been talking about teaching as a part of my second life for as long as I can remember. Though I started down the path to teaching adults, I discovered a passion for teaching middle and high school aged kids through coaching and subbing.
I currently hold an endorsements in Technology Education, Middle School Social Studies, and Marketing. I will add an endorsement in Business shortly. In addition I am eligible for a provisional Special Education license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
I feel extremely fortunate to be back at River Bend full time this year. The students, parents, teachers and administrators at RBMS make it an exceptionally fun and rewarding place to be.
All the very best,
7th Grade Tech ED Teacher
