Mr. O'Brien,John

My name is John O’Brien. Students at River Bend know me as Coach O.

I  grew up approximately 5 miles south of Boston, as the seagull flies, in the Town of Hull, Massachusetts. My family and I have lived in Northern Virginia for more than 25-years. My wife of 41 years and I are empty nesters, having raised three children two of whom still reside in the Northern Virginia area.

I am beginning my 4th year teaching Tech Ed in 7th and 8th grade.  TEch Ed is where students get to ask, and answer for themselves, the question; "why do I have to learn all this stuff?".

I have a degree in political science from Salem State University located in Salem, Massachusetts. I hold certifications in Advanced Performance Management, Advanced Achievement Leadership and as a Certified Professional Coach with an endorsement as a Master Practitioner of the ELI Assessment tool.  I spent 32 years leading large divisions of media companies and continue to coach organizations in change leadership.

I tutor math, language arts and science in grades 6-8. 

I have over 17 years of experience working with young people as a USA Hockey Advanced Level Certified Coach. I am currently the supervisor for Loudoun County Parks and Recreation Department's youth after school program (YAS) at River Bend Middle School.
