Ms. Jen Cherry

Hello Brambleton Families,

My name is Jen Cherry and I am a 7th Grade English Teacher at BAM!

The 2019-2020 school year will be my ninth year with Loudoun. I began my teaching career with Pinebrook Elementary, where I taught third and fifth grade. I then entered the world of middle school, opening Trailside and then Brambleton. This year will be my fifth year in the 7th grade English classroom. Working with 7th Grade is my happy place because of the rich conversations, thought provoking ideas, and opportunities to attack challenges.

A little bit about me:

After graduating from North Carolina State University (Go Pack!!), I left my home in Raleigh and moved to Northern Virginia. My husband and I have lived in the area for twelve years now, finally settling down in Loudoun. We are lucky to have two amazing children, Riley and Luke. They are adventurous and love to try anything, even if it scares me... I love summer break, because it allows me the opportunity to embark on local explorations daily with the two of them. As a family, we love to travel, camp, and play sports. As a person, I love to read pretty much anything, binge watch my favorite shows (The Office, Friends, and Parks & Rec), craft, and play with photography. You'll also see that I collect Funko characters when you step in the classroom!

A little bit about our classroom:

The first thing you notice when you walk into room 721 is the lack of desks! There is a variety of seating options scattered throughout the space, allowing students to find the place they are most comfortable. If you have any extra tables/stools/chairs/couches, I'm happy to take those off your hands :)

We run the reading and writing workshop model. The only way to become better readers and writers is to actually read and write, and we make time for both daily. Students will be asked to push beyond their own limitations and embrace a growth mindset, all while creatively expressing their thoughts and opinions. Most of our work is completed through long term projects and very few formal quizzes/tests. I know this can be a huge shift for student thinking, and it's important to value work time in class and effective planning.

We will utilize a variety of tecnology tools and platforms to share our work as we Create, Motivate, Lead, Inspire, and Believe. Students will have assignments through both Newsela and NoRedInk as we move through the year.

The expectations are high, but the rewards far outweigh any of our struggles!

Personally, I feel lucky to step into this time of my students' lives. My goal is to structure my classroom and lessons in a way that I would want my own children to experience.
