• Profile Picture Ms. Gittelman is thrilled to be teaching 8th Grade English at J. Michael Lunsford for the fourth year! She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from The University of Maryland and a Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction from George Mason University. Prior to becoming a teacher, Ms. Gittelman worked as an Instructional Designer for 20 years, developing competency-based degree programs. Her favorite author is Roald Dahl, because his books always make reading a magical experience for her. Ms. Gittelman lives in South Riding with her husband and two sons, both Freedom HS students, and, when she's not teaching, enjoys training for and competing in triathlons.

    Email Ms. Gittelman (alison.gittelman@lcps.org)
Daily classroom updates (including assignments and homework) will be posted in Google Classroom. Students should log in regularly to review what we did in class. This is especially important if they have been absent!
Required supplies for English 8 students:
    • ONE 3-subject 11 x 9 spiral bound notebook (essential item not on school supply list; my apologies)
    • Pens, pencils, highlighters (at least 2 of each)
    • Glue sticks or tape (2 of either)
    • Pencil pouch
    • Independent reading book (student choice)
    • The Giver by Lois Lowry*

*Starting October 1, we will begin reading The Giver by Lois Lowry. Because we do not have enough copies for all of our eighth graders, we ask parents to purchase a copy for their students, if possible. Any edition of the book is acceptable, and hand-me-down copies are encouraged!

I use the Remind app to send reminder texts when assignments and/or homework are due. I recommend that students sign up for these text reminders, and parents are welcome to do so as well. Simply text the code below to 81010: (be sure to sign up for the correct day!)
