Jenny Shipman
Hi! My name is Jenny Shipman and I am so excited to be co-teaching with Ms. Proctor again this year in 5th grade.
I am originally from Rutland, Massachusetts, which is about 50 miles west of Boston. I graduated from Immaculata University in 2001 with a Bachelor's of Music in Music Therapy. From there, I worked for the Devereux Foundation as both a Recreation Director and later as a teacher from 2001-2003. In 2004 I became an ABA Therapist for the May Institute, based out of Boston. I moved to Virginia in 2006, finalized my Professional Teacher's License, and began working as a Special Education Teacher in Fairfax County. I joined the Horizon Elementary staff in 2011 and was there up until the 2016-2017 school year. This will be my third year at Discovery.
I would describe my teaching style as structured but fun. I truly believe kids will remember more if they're having fun while learning. Whether its using a silly accent to teach about cold or warm fronts in science, or doing a multiplication dance, our classroom has fun. But even more importantly, our classroom truly focuses on the fact that we are a family during our time together at school. We focus on kindness, acceptance, empathy, and respect for all as we are an inclusion setting. Both Ms. Proctor and I hope to foster friendships within our classroom that will last a lifetime!
I live in Broadlands with my husband, 16 year old stepson, 8 year old daughter, and our newest addition - my Dad! I love the Boston Red Sox and I love dragonflies.
