Mr. Tom Kilday

It's hard to believe I am going on my 3rd year here at Trailside Middle School. It seems like only yesterday when I was hired. Time does fly by fast. Needless to say, it has been a tremendous experience! I have learned more in the last two years than I ever could imagine, regarding areas such as technology usage in the classroom, as well as Project Based Learning teacher practices. Thanks to a tremendous support system here, I feel I am finally at a point where my experience prior to coming here, combined with the new experiences I have gained over the past two years, are at their peak melting point. Not to say that I won't continue to learn and grow, because I will, but now, at the beginning of my 3rd year, I feel a sense of comfort and strength that will make the experience of being a teacher that much more rewarding. I am very much looking forward to the 2018-2019 school year, as well as looking forward to what lays ahead beyond that.

A little about me; except for three years living in Costa Rica as a teen, I am a lifelong Northern Virginia Resident. I grew up in the West Springfield area, but now call Ashburn my home. I do love it here in Loudoun County. Career wise, after graduting from Radford University with a B.S. in Business Administration, I spent many years working n the Sales and the Hospitality fields. Not satisified with where I was at, i made a late career change. There was a long time that passed before I went back and earned my Masters degree in Special Education from George Mason University; however, I found the time separation to be a huge positive as the delay only served to strengthen my resolve to pursue my new chosen career with 100% certainty. I have been teaching Special Education for the past 14 years, working mainly with students struggling with severe emotional disabilities, as well as learning disabilities. My teaching philosophy holds true today just as it did when I first started out teaching yeas ago; empathy is the key to building strong relationships with the students. Empathy, one of my stronger character traits and something I am proud of, allows me to truly appreciate my profession.
