Mr. Galway
Mr. Galway was born and raised in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. He attended West Virginia University on a Presidential Scholarship in the Arts and earned his Bachelor of Music, Magna Cum Laude. While at WVU, Mr. Galway was a member of the Wind Symphony, Jazz Ensemble I, Symphony Orchestra, Trombone Ensemble, Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble, and the award-winning Pride of West Virginia Mountaineer Marching Band. He studied euphonium and trombone with Richard Powell, jazz with Curtis Johnson, and conducting with Don Wilcox and Lawrence Christianson. Mr. Galway has completed additional graduate studies in conducting, jazz, and world music at Shenandoah University, The University of the Arts, The University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and VanderCook College of Music.
He began his teaching career at Owings Mills High School in Baltimore County, Maryland. During his 8 years at Owings Mills, Mr. Galway taught beginning and intermediate guitar, music technology, general music, adaptive music for students with special needs, and directed the OMHS Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Jazz Ensemble. He worked on a curriculum development committee for high school general music and co-wrote the guitar curriculum used by all Baltimore County high schools.
Mr. Galway taught at Freedom High School from 2005-2020. Where he directed the Concert Band, Wind Symphony, Artist Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensembles, and the Spirit of Freedom Marching Band. Under his direction, the Freedom High School Band Program earned many superior ratings and first place awards, was a six-time Virginia Honor Band, and was recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia General Assembly via House Resolutions No. 149 and 527, commending the Freedom High School Band Program on its successes.
Mr. Galway has performed as a trombone player in the NOVA Manassas Symphony Orchestra and as a multi-brass player, vocalist, and music arranger for Checkered Past, a Baltimore-based classic rock band. He lives in Centreville, Virginia with his wife Sonal and has been the Band Director at Harper Park Middle School since 2020. This is his 26th year teaching music.
