Computer Science Honor Society

  • Welcome to the Broad Run Computer Science Honor Society.  The Computer Science Honor Society is open to any student who maintains a 3.5 or higher GPA in computer science and computer technology classes.  We meet every Wednesday after school in Room 121.

I'm Mr. Rochon, the Honor Society sponsor.

The Honor Society is recognized nationally through the Computer Science Teachers Association.  Honor Society Members must participate in service activities such as Hour of Code and Computer Science Education Week activities.  Additionally, The Computer Science Honor Society will coordinate CyberPatriot and Computer Programming competitions.

    CyberPatriot:

At the center of CyberPatriot is the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, which puts teams of high school and middle school students in the position of newly hired IT professionals tasked with managing the network of a small company. Through a series of online competition rounds, teams are given a set of virtual operating systems and are tasked with finding and fixing cybersecurity vulnerabilities while maintaining critical services.  Teams are limited to five members, but we can have multiple teams.  We will meet for practice sessions on a day that is to be determined, either weekly or once every two weeks.  Competitions will be held in school on designated Friday evenings throughout the year as shown in the schedule below, from 4:30PM to 10PM.  Food will be provided on competition days.

    CyberPatriot schedule:

    Round 1: October 20
    Round 2: November 3
    State Round:  December 8

Additionally, for teams that meet a minimum score in the state round on December 8, there is a semifinal round on January 19.

    Programming Competitions:

There are multiple coding competitions throughout the year. Programming teams will be fielded depending on interest and capabilities.  Competitions are usually held at venues throughout Maryland and Virginia on Saturdays starting in the Spring.   On Wednesdays, we will practice programming puzzles to prepare for competitions.
