A little bit of information about Mr. Colsey
Welcome to 6th Grade Social Studies!
I am excited to be teaching this fantastic subject at Mercer! The story of the United States has always been a topic that I love to read, discuss and teach about, and I am hoping that same love of the topic will infect my classroom. This course will cover from the original settlements through the time of Lincoln. We will learn of the geography of the country, expansion efforts, the original leaders, a bit of economics, the development of the government and some related war efforts.
I joined the Mercer Middle School faculty in 2015 as a Career & Technical Education (Business Education:Keyboarding) and Technology Education teacher. Since 2005, I have served as a college instructor/professor in Public Administration, Leadership Studies, Criminal Justice and Government courses. Prior to serving as an elected or appointed government official (11 years), I was in the corporate world for more than a decade. As a community volunteer, I have served as an IRS Tax Preparer (VITA) for low income residents, am the Loudoun County Area Coordinator for Operation Christmas Child/Samaritans Purse, and have been appointed to some Virginia governmental committees or boards. I was the Teacher-sponsor for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Mercer from 2017-2019, and now co-lead the SCA.
I have a Bachelors in Natural Science from Messiah College, a Masters of Public Administration from Marist College, and a Masters of Education from Regent University. I completed my doctoral coursework and competency examination in Management & Leadership with Tennessee Temple University. I am currently pursuing my doctorate in education and expected to finish that coursework prior to Summer 2019.
I also hold or held the following designations: Municipal Planner Level I (NY-2003); (Building) Codes Officer (NY-2004); Administrative Municipal Analyst (NY-2004); Risk Management (NY-2011); Associate in Claims; Workers Compensation Certificate (PA); registered Tax Preparer and Microsoft Office Specialist.
Life Outside the Mercer Campus
I continue to teach government classes at the undergraduate college level and spend most of my free time either doing my coursework, renovating our "fixer upper" home on Lake Louisa or working on an 18 year old pickup truck. My wife is a Kindergarten teacher and my daughter is married and living in the Fairfax area. She is a teacher and married to a military reservist and government employee who recently bought a motorcycle. They recently added a Irishdoodle named Oliver to their family.
