Professional BiographyBram SmithDepartment Chair, Fine Arts; Band DirectorWilliam Bramwell Smith, IV holds a Bachelor’s of Music with an emphasis in Instrumental Music Education from George Mason University. His major instructors include Anthony Maiello (conducting), John Casagrande (Instrumental Methods), and SGM (ret.) Dennis Edelbrock.Mr. Smith has been working with Loudoun County Public Schools since January 2009 when he became the Orchestra Director at Seneca Ridge Middle School. He was also the Assistant Band Director at River Bend Middle School in 2011-2012. During that time, he also served as the Assistant Band Director for the Stone Bridge High School Marching Bulldogs; a position that he held until 2012 when he was offered the position of Band Director at Broad Run High School.During Mr. Smith’s tenure as Band Director at Broad High School, the bands consistently received superior ratings and the program was named a Virginia Honor Band Program in 2012-2013 and 2013-2014. The Marching Spartans under Mr. Smith’s direction were USBANDS VA State Champion in Class AA & Class AAA and received the prestigious “Cadets Award of Excellence” in 2012.The BRHS Band Program hosted the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” and the US Army Herald Trumpets in concert in April 2014 with selected students performing and Mr. Smith being a featured guest conductor. Most recently, the Broad Run Band was featured in a concert at Cadogan Hall (home of the London Philharmonic Orchestra) in London, England and the Marching Spartans marched in the 2015 London New Year’s Day Parade.Since Riverside High School's inaugural year, the band program has grown exponentially each year, and the bands have received superior ratings, including the school's first Virginia Honor Band designation during the 2018-2019 program. The Riverside Music Department also received Blue Ribbon designation for acheivements across all disciplines in 2016-2017. Additionally, the Riverside Jazz program received its first superior rating during its first adjudicated outing this past spring at the District Jazz Assessment (2019). The Riverside Marching Rams have been named the USBANDS VA State Champions for Class A (2017) and Class AA (2018). Mr. Smith’s students have been honored with placements at All-District, All-Regional, and All-Virginia Band events.In addition to his experiences with music education, Mr. Smith served as a trumpet player in the 257th Army Band from 2001 to 2014. With the 257th, he played many concert tours, ceremonies, and was used as a featured trumpet soloist in and around the Washington, DC area, as well as in the Northeast Continental US, the state of Texas, the US Virgin Islands, and the 2008 Presidential Inauguration of Barrack Obama. Mr. Smith Lineage in the military bands not only includes his father, but grandfather and his brother who he served with in the 257th Army Band. It was Mr. Smith’s Grandfather (William Bramwell Smith Jr.) who co-founded the US Army Herald Trumpets in 1959 and his father (William Bramwell Smith III) became the enlisted leader in charge of the Heralds for more than a decade until his retirement from the Army.Mr. Smith currently lives in Leesburg with his wife, Amanda (who is also a music teacher in Loudoun), and daughter, Caroline. He is looking forward to building a strong band program at Riverside High School and working with the school community to provide a great atmosphere for music and arts education.
