Degrees and Certifications:
Ms. Karen Hart
Hello Eagle Ridge parents and students. Welcome to my information page. This is my forth year teaching Communications and my 1st year teaching Civics. I've been at Eagle Ridge for the past 10 years--my first six years as a Resource teacher.
I have five blocks of Communications classes this year. It's difficult for me to put into words how much I LOVE teaching this class. Because of the course work involved, each and every year is different. I try to make the class as student-driven as possible. If students want to dive a little deeper on a particular unit, we do. My goal each year is to get my students to become the best communicators they can. I want them to go forward from my class and be able to hold their own in a debate, be able to speak in public without being nervous and to have a deeper understanding of the world events they see around them every day. And yes, we do have fun in this class.
Each year I try to have as many communications professionals come in and speak with the class as possible. If you or someone you know is involved in journalism, photojournalism, movie production, advertising, public speaking or any other communications-based industry, please let me know. I'd love to have them come in and speak to my class. I think it's imperative for the kids to hear how what they are learning in class can be applied in real world situations.
This year I'm also teaching one class of Civics (7th block). I am very excited about taking on this opportunity. I used to work in DC for a political magazine and got to know first-hand the inner workings of our Federal Government as well as state and local governments. As in my Communications class, I anticipate and encourage lively and respectful debates on a variety to topics related to Civics.
As I have done in the past, I have a class Instagram account which I encourage all my students to follow. The account is Eagleharts. I will also be using Remind.com again this year as a text service. I will talk more about that during Back to School Night.
In addition to teaching Civics and Communications, I'm also the faculty advisor to the yearbook and run our morning announcements program.
My planning blocks are 1st and 5th block and my room is located in Computer lab 1.
I look forward to guiding your student through the year and making the most of our time together. If you ever need anything, please don't hesitate to contact me (email is best) and I'll be happy to help you any way I can.
Let's have a GREAT year!
