Mrs. Caitlin McDermott-Couch
Hello 2nd grade students and families! My name is Mrs. Caitlin McDermott-Couch and I am thrilled to be a part of the staff at Potowmack Elementary School! This will be my 8th year teaching. In the past, I taught 1st grade and 4th grade. In addition to teaching, I serve as our school's Equity Lead as well as our team Social Emotional Learning Lead.
I was born in Texas (Go Cowboys!) and have also lived in New Jersey. I finally moved to Virginia to attend James Madison University where I graduated with a Masters in the Art of Teaching (M.A.T.) and a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies and a minor in Elementary Education with a concentration in Math, Science, and Technology.
While at JMU, I worked at the John C. Wells Planetarium as a planetarium operator. I gave public shows and field trip presentations about the stars and planets. Sometimes, the audience was almost 100 people! I worked closely with local teachers to align planetarium shows with Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) as well as application in the classroom. We also partnered with NASA and founded the first-ever summer space camp at JMU for students 5th-9th grade and since then, the program has grown exponentially!
Outside of the classroom, I love hiking and stargazing with my Italian Greyhound, Luca. I enjoy playing the piano, guitar, and ukulele! I cannot wait to get this year started and meet each of you!
