• Welcome Trailblazers!

We are thrilled to BLAZE this new TRAIL with all of you! As school counselors, we look forward to creating an environment where all students feel nurtured and valued. Our school counseling program is designed to provide various ways of meeting each child’s needs through classroom guidance lessons, small group counseling, and individual counseling. School counselors provide assistance in solving problems that may interfere with students’ educational and personal development.

    Classroom Counseling Lessons

Classroom counseling lessons are provided weekly to ALL classes at Discovery. Ms. Smidt teaches counseling lessons to first, second, and third grades and Ms. Vickers teaches counseling lessons to kindergarten, fourth, and fifth grades. Lessons include class activities and discussions with students, which focus on a variety of topics such as social skills, conflict resolution, decision-making, teamwork, study skills, stress management, bullying prevention, making friends, self-esteem building, and career awareness.

    Small Group Counseling

We also provide small group counseling. Our groups are more individually focused and are designed to work on a child’s specific needs. We offer groups on anger management, changing families, self-esteem, self-regulation, friendship, and social skills. We add additional topics if there is a particular need. If you would like additional information about small groups, please contact your child's teacher or the counselors.

    Individual Counseling

We are also available to meet individually with students to discuss any concerns or worries that may impact their learning while here at school. Student issues typically are those of friendship, grief, divorce, conflict, and school anxiety. Students may be referred to the counselor by a parent, teacher, or administrator. Students may also refer themselves.

    Parent Consultation

Additionally, we are available for consultation with parents to discuss issues which may be impacting a student's academic achievement and to help plan strategies for successful learning.
