• WELCOME TO 6TH GRADE ENGLISH!

This year you will read and write in every class.  If you love to do both - hurray!
If not, we will find a way to make both better for you.

Here is what you can expect:

    Reading:

For the most part, you will be able to choose the books you read this year.  I will ask you to step outside your favorite genre, though, and try something new once in awhile.  We will start the year with a whole class novel so we can learn how to read like a writer.  I want you to experience getting lost in a book so at the end of each quarter we will spend the whole block reading In the Zone! I love helping students find books and I read a LOT - at least 40 books a quarter. If I can't help you, your classmates can and we will spend time sharing some of our great reads with each other.  Be thinking about books that have meant a lot to you as you have grown up - that will be our first book discussion.

    Writing:

You will leave 6th grade a better writer - that's a promise! Every class we will do Beautiful Words where we do a quickwrite to a song, poem, video, or picture.  I hope you will be looking for possibilities for us to use as the year unfolds. Here are some of the ways we will be writing this year; a Slice of Life Memoir, Free Choice Writings, Poetry, Letters, Stories, and research projects.

    Project Based Learning:

This year you will be working on a Genius Hour Project.  Each week you will be given time to research a question of your choice. The first quarter we will begin by asking, 'Who am I? as a person? as a reader? as a writer? It's important to know who we are and where we are going so we can make decisions on how to make a difference in the world.  I can't wait to start the journey with you!
