    JANUARY 19

    Varsity Swim: Come see Woodgrove take on Loudoun Valley tonight at Ida Lee Rec Center.  Meet starts at 9 PM.  There will be state record holders, state qualified and swimmer qualifying for states swimming at the meet.  Swimmers are athletes who have learned that oxygen is overrated. Come see how it's done!!

     

    Congratulations to the gymnastic team for their impressive 1st place win last night at their home meet. Freshman Megan Dunster placed 6th all around  and tied for 4th on vault along with Junior Erin Ramsey who also placed 5th on floor and 5th all around.  Sophmore Jodi Snare placed 2ndon vault, 5th on bars, 2nd on beams, 5th on floor and 2nd all around.  Junior Rive Stone placed 1st on vault, bars, beam and floor with a new school record of a 9.8 on floor. She also placed 1st on all around with a score of 37.4. Congratulations girls and good luck at your upcoming meet this Saturday.

    Varsity Swim congratulates Senior Ben Piliere- possibly the fastest person at Woodgrove this year!  Ben is going to his 4th States.  He has qualified in 50 and 100 free as well as the 100 FLY. It is amazing to see him swim because he does not quit!!! Congratulations Ben Piliere!!

    Congratulations to the Wrestling Team on an outstanding performance at the Judges Invitational at Handley High School this weekend.  The wrestlers made a huge jump in performance between the Hub Cup last weekend and the Judges Invitational.  The team finished in 5th place out of 17 schools.  Top place winners were:  Aiden Fitzwater, 7th place - Lincoln Sutphin, AJ Bartling and Ivan Adams all placing 5th - Connor Sisk, 4th - Drew Oliver, 3rd - Kyle Dant made his first tournament finals and placed 2nd. Derek Shockey was champion in his weight class and won the MOST OUTSTANDING WRESTLING award. Great job guys!! The wrestlers return to action this weekend at home in the Get The Bell Rung Invitational...Come out and check out some of the action!!

     The Academic Team knocked off the defending state champions but ultimately that wasn't enough as the Scholarly Wolverines finished in third place in the Dulles District Tournament.  The team went 3 and 2 last night, beating Dominion, Park View and County but losing to Valley and Riverside.  The following students represented our school with class, intelligence, and magnanimity:  Darin Avila, Jack Delmonte, Rebecca Faletti, Emily Franklin, Hannah Franklin, Kristina Greene, Dominic Jimeno, Michael McKim, Collin Warner, Sean Whalen.  Congratulations on a fine regular season and good luck next Saturday at your It's Academic taping at the NBC studios in DC.

     

    Debate: Congratulations to Dylan Beckstron, Haley O'Neill, Kristina Green and Madeleine Heffern who participated in the WACFL 4 debate tournament this past weekend at Rock Ridge High School.  The team of Maddie Heffern and Kristina Green posted a 3-1 record. Outstanding performance and congratulations.

    The Academic Team closed out their regular season last night at home, winning 2 of 3 matches.  The Wise Wolverines Vanquished Valley 270-110 and Toppled the Titans 255-130 before dropping a 195-190 nail biter to the Learned Lions of Heritage.  The Sagacious Scholars enter Thursday's District tournament as the number two seed.  Congratulations and best of luck to Darin Avila, Jack Delmonte, Rebecca Faletti, Emily Franklin, Hannah Franklin, Dominic Jimeno, Michael McKim, Collin Warner and Sean Whalen.

     

    The Wrestling Team competed in the prestigious  Hub Cup Tournament in Hagerstown, MD this past weekend.  Congratulations to the following place winners:  Derek Shockey 2nd place, AJ Bartling 3rd place, Drew Oliver and Kyle Dant 5th place and Lincoln Sutphin 6th place.  The team is in action again tonight at Home against Loudoun County and Heritage.  We will be recognizing our seniors tonight promptly at 6:00 PM.  We would like to invite everyone to come out and support the team and our seniors.

    Over winter break the Varsity Swim Team was busy competing in 3 meets.  Congratulations to both the boy's and girl's teams for beating Dominion in both of their meets and to the girls for beating Loudoun County in that meet.  Way to go swimming Wolverines!!

    Indoor Track:  Maxine Barnes finished 5th place in the Nike Throwdown shot put competition last week out of over 50 athletes from all state classifications.  She was first for all 4A throwers and state qualified for the Indoor Track Championships and set a new indoor shot record for Woodgrove. Congratulations Maxine!!

    DECEMBER 15

    The Academic Team split a pair of matches last night.  They lost a back and forth battle to Heritage 190 to 180 before bouncing back against Park View.  Emily "Montana" Franklin secured the 210-135 victory in the final buzzer round.  The team's record now stands at 5 and 3.  Congratulations to Darin Avila, Jack Delmonte, Rebecca Faletti, Emily Franklin, Hannah Franklin, Michael McKim, Collin Warner and Sean Whalen.  The Scholarly Wolverines will now settle down for a long winter's nap before returning to action in January.

     

     The Ice Hockey team has a game tonight at 9:00 PM at Haymarket Ice Plex on the south rink.

    This is a big weekend for Woodgrove Swim Team.  Tonight at 7 PM at Ida Lee Park, Woodgrove swims against Loudoun County.  Tomorrow at 4 PM at Claude Moore, Woodgrove swims against Dominion.

    DECEMBER 14

    Good luck to the Varsity Gymnastics team as they travel to Riverside today.  Competition starts at 6:30.  We would love any support you can share!  Rock the chalk tonight girls!!

     

    The Academic Team took 2 of 3 matches last night.  They fell to County in the opening match but then knocked off Riverside 230-190, avenging an earlier loss, then beat Heritage in a nail biter, 235-210.  Congratulations to Collin Warner, Darin Avila, Emily Franklin, Hannah Franklin, Jack Delmonte, Michael McKim, Rebecca Faletti and Sean Whalen.  The Scholarly Wolverines return to action tomorrow night at Park View. Great job!!

    Woodgroves Winter Concert by our fabulous chorus will held this evening.  There will be cookies and hot chocolate for everyone and some wonderful holiday music. Come out and support the Woodgrove Chorus!

     

    The Woodgrove girls Varsity Basketball team moved to 4-2 on the year last night with a win over Osbourn.  Madi White led the team in scoring with 14 points.  Jenn Glazebrook and Lily Forrester both contributed with 11 points each as well. Great job girls

     

    The school store will be open this evening from 5:30 - 8:30 PM during the boys basketball game.

Congrats girls.

     

    The Academic Team split a pair of matches last night, falling to Riverside before bouncing back and beating Valley in their season opener.  Collin Warner, Jack Delmonte, Rebecca Faletti, and Darin Avila combined to shut Valley out in the first round by a score of one hundred fifty to negative five!  Hannah Franklin, Michael McKim and Emily Franklin joined them in the later rounds to compete the beat down.  The team will practice after school on Monday and then travel to Heritage on Tuesday, Parkview on Thursday.

    Woodgrove had an IMPRESSIVE 38 delegates make district chorus this year and five alternates!  Only a small percentage of students who audition are accepted out of all 15 high schools in Loudoun County.  Congratulations!

    Congratulations to Sophie Hudak and Rylan Pettit.  Both had fantastic races on Friday at the VHSL State Cross Country Championship.  Despite cold and windy conditions, Sophie finished with an impressive time of 19:55 earning her 20th place among the women.  Rylan earned an All-State position for the second year in a row with a 9th place finish and a time of 16:17.  Great job, Sophie and Rylan!  You represented Woodgrove Cross Country very well!

    The Marching Wolverines traveled to Patriot High School in Nokesville this past weekend to participate in the Virginia Band Director's Association marching band assessment. The marching band put on one of their best performances all season and received a Superior Rating. A rating of superior is the highest award given to marching bands at this event. Congratulations, Woodgrove Marching Wolverines!

    Any student interested in joing the staff of the literary magazine should attend a meeting Thursday, November 2nd at 8:30 AM in Mrs. Pyle's room, 301.  The lit mag staff selects writing and art for a magazine to be published in the spring. 

    October 27                                                                                                                                  Freshman Volleyball:Woodgrove lost to Valley 29-27 26-24 16-14. In the opening match against Valley Gretchen Nagle set the tone of the game with an incredible dive to win the point. Anna Lockhart and Jaime Prack's leadership on the court steered them through a tight three set match. The offense was led by Riley Catellano, Kayleigh Grady and the surprise back row attacks of Katie Culp.The wall of woodgrove was put up last night by Lexi rovang, Riley Castellano, Abigail Sunberg  and Brielle Borvansky. Any hits that made it past the wall were quickly defended by Katie Culp,Stephanie HAak, Meghan Fewell  Logan Johnson and Ryan Wright.It was an incredible shared with an amazing group that came out to support us. Thank you for an incredible season!

    Congratulations to the Varsity Volleyball team on their win over Loudoun Valley last night!  It was a tremendous win!  Coach Keilty would like to thank all the students and staff who attended the match las evening as well as the tremendously talented choir.  We hope to see everyone Monday night @ 7 PM here vs. Riverside.

    The Woodgrove Outlander has arrived! Get your copy of the school newspaper today! You can get copies from any newspaper staff member, from your teachers or from room 609.  
    Congratulations to the newspaper staff! They were notified that last year's newspapers were awarded a first place designation in the state.  The staff recieved excellent ratings in all areas, including reporting, writing design and business management. Congratulations!

    Congratulations Woodgrove Cross Country for advancing to regionals!  The girls team finished 2nd overall. Congratulations to Sophie Hudak, Shelby Kostal, Esme Byrd, Kylie Budd, Audrey Warner, Genovi Rattana-Jones, and Callie Junker.  The boys team finished 4th overall. Congratulations to Rylan Pettit, Frank Ricker, Jack Cohen, Eric Nelson, Kevin Payne and Matt Renner.  A big shout out to Sophie Hudak and Rylan Pettit both earning the title of the 2017 Conference Champions. Sophie was first in the girl's race with a time of 19:56 and Rylan was first in the boy's race with a time of 16:31.  Additional Woodgrove runners earned All Conference titles:  Shelby Kostal with a 4th place finish and Esme Byrd with a 14th place finish. Great job Woodgrove Cross Country!! Next up:  REGIONALS! Come cheer on your team, November 1st at Kernstown Battlefield.

    October 24
    Our Marching Wolverines did it again!! The marching band traveled to Oakton high school on Saturday to compete in the 32nd Annual Oakton Classic. The Band won 1st place in the group 2a division as well as won the Burgundy Award for having the highest score in group 1a as well. The marching band also took 1st place in music, 1st place in color guard and 1st place in marching. Congratulations to our Woodgrove Marching Wolverines.

    The Woodgrove Debate Policy and Lincoln Douglas teams competed in their first tournament this past weekend at Dominion High School. Woodgrove finished in first place in Policy, Varsity divisionwith Abby
    Lenhart and Lizzie Clark; Abby was also recognized as the 2nd place speaker in the tournament
    Giovanni Cianciaruso and Patrick Swisher placed third in varsity policy. Giovanni was named 1st place speaker overall. In Policy JV: Riley Hartung and Ryan Smith placed first; Ryan Smith was named 2nd place speaker overall and Riley 3rd place speakeroverall. In Policy JV: Mina Bjerke and Hannah Norsworthy - 5th place team; All of those policy teams are qualified for MetroFinals.

Outstanding defensive play by Sara Traver, Lauren Lynch, Dylann Armann, Melody Haak and Mia Schaeffer. Great job ladies!
     
    The Freshman Volleyball team defeated Riverside in an amazing 3 set match, 20-25, 25-16 and 15-12.  Gretchen Nagle, Kayleigh Grady and Jamie Prack dominated from the service line.  The defensive efforts of Lexie Rovang, Anna Lockhart and Katie Culp shut down the Riverside offense.  The win was sealed thanks to Coach Kielty and the Varsity/JV team for cheering the girls on.

    NHS is hosting its biannual blood drive, in partnership with Red Cross, on November 16th.  We will have a sign-up booth during open lunches leading up to the drive.     Saturday was an exciting race day for Woodgrove Cross Country.  The running Wolverines turned in some fast times and earned a few medals at the Gettysburg Invitational.  Over 300 runners competed in the two girls' races.  Ten Woodgrove girls finished in under 23 minutes across the 2 races:  Mariah Wauer, Emily Garman, Amanda Lock, Kylie Budd, Genovi Rattana, Esme Byrd, Calle Junker, Audrey Warner, Shelby Kostal and Sophie Hudak.  Earning medals in the JV race were: 17th place Olivia Haller, 14th place Jillian Haas, 8th place Mariaha Wauer and 4th place Emily Garman.  Sophie Hudak earned a medal in the Varsity race with a 4th place finish and a time of 19:15.  Over 500 runners competed in the two boy's races.  Twelve Woodgrove boys came across the line in under 20 minutes between the 2 races:  Zachary Yriat, Collin DeBruyn, Carson Forsyth, Colin Warner, Matt Renner, Kevin Payne, Eric Nelson, Frank Ricker, Jack Cohen, Sam Schnabel, Matt Geier and Will Fincher.  Will Fincher earned a medal in the Varsity race with a 19th place finish and a time of 17:01.  Rylan Pettit represented Woodgrove at the Great American Cross Country Festival in Cary, NC.  He finished 33rd in a field of 200 with a time of 15:55.
    Come cheer on the team Wednesday at Ida Lee and Saturday at Millbrook High School.

    All Driver Education Students: Tonight, Sept. 27th and Next Wednesday, Oct. 4th, Woodgrove will host its annual Partners For Safe Teen Driving presentation.  Each student currently enrolled in Driver Education is required to attend one session with a parent present.  Presentations are held from 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM. Doors close promptly at 7:05 PM. The parent/guardian and student must attend this 90 minute presentation together. The Code of Virginia regulates these presentations and NO LATE ARRIVALS ARE PERMITTED! Any questions please ask your Driver Education teacher.

    The Varsity Field Hockey team improved their record to 7-2 winning an out of conference game last night against George Mason HS 3-2. Caroline Catterton scored the winning goal with 40 seconds left in the game. Other goal scorers included Jensen Bury and Sofia Thompson.  The girls will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Loudoun Valley to take on Dominion starting at 6:45. Good luck girls!
     
    Congrats to the Varsity Volleyball Team on their win over Riverside.  Maddie Erb led the team with 9 kills and Eve Lippert added 8 kills.  Kaileigh Ryan added 9 digs and Meghan Cleary added 27 assists.  Great defensive effort by Ashleigh Moffett, Kaileigh Ryan and Cara Grady.

    The Freshman Girls Volleyball beat Heritage in 2 games 25-16 and 25-18. Great job girls!

    The Woodgrove Golf Team won the Dulles District Championship on Tuesday at Algonkian Golf Course.  The Wolverines posted a team total of 294, five shots clear of second place at Loudoun Valley.  Alex Price and Michael Thomas and one other golfer shared low medalist honors with a score of 71.  Alex Price won in a two hole playoff to capture the individual medal.  Joey Eastman placed fourth (74) and Kelly Klimeck rounded out the counting scores with a 78.  The Wolverines will play for the Regional Championship at Loudoun Golf and Country Club next Thursday, September 28 at 9 AM.

    Despite the heat and humidity, Woodgrove Cross Country held a firm presence at the Oatland’s Invitational on Saturday. Five girls finished with times under 23 minutes, all in the Varsity A race:  Esme Byrd, Calle  Junker, Audrey Warner, Shelby Kostal, and Sophie Hudak.  Sophie was just one spot shy of medal contention placing 26th with a time of 20:45.Five boys came over the line in under 20 minutes across the four races:  Eric Nelson, Jack Cohen, Matt Geier, Will Fincher, and Rylan Pettit.  Jack Cohen earned a medal in the JV Underclassmen race.  He placed 24th with a time of 19:35.  Rylan Pettit earned a medal in the Varsity A race.  He placed 20th with a time of 16:52. Well done, WXC!  Don’t miss your chance to support the Cross Country team at the LCPS Championships here at Woodgrove on Saturday, Sept. 23.
     
    The Girls Field Hockey team improved their record last night to 6-2 winning their 3rd game in 4 nights by defeating Rock Ridge 2-0 (goals by Jenson Bury and Sophia Thompson, and assists by Racheal Lambert helped secure the victory. The girls do not play again until Monday, Sept. 25.
     
    Come cheer on the Lady Wolverines Volleyball team as they take on Heritage tomorrow. Both teams are tied in conference play and could really use your support. Good luck to all team members!

    The Girls Varsity Field Hockey Team played a well rounded game last night and was able to defeat Park View by a final score or 10-0. Two goals were scored by both Taly Zapanta and Caroline Catterton.  Other goal scorers included Kendall Briscoe, Autumn Birch, Sofia Thompson, Adeline Furlow, Erin Kaplan and Isaella Renda. Assists were credited to Caroline Catterton, Alex Young, Erin Kaplan and Ally Widzinski.  The girls are back in action tonight, taking on Rock Ridge at Briar Woods HS starting at 7:15 PM.

Goalies Lauryl King and Annabel Kelly each played a half, stopping all of  Freedom's shots, with Annabel dazzling the crowd with an impressive 2nd half save.  Goal scorers include Caroline Catterton who scored 3 times, along with one each from Jensen Bury and Addison Halveland.  The girls play again next Wednesday away from home when they take on Briar Woods starting at 6:30 PM.     Woodgrove Cross Country competed in the Great Meadow Invitational on Saturday.  Woodgrove had strong finishes with Kylie Budd, Emma Jane Kimmett, and Shelby Kostal crossing the finishing line in under 22 minutes. Our fastest girl's finisher, Sophie Hudak, finished with a time of 20:08 earning her 14th place in the Varsity A race.  On the boys side, turning in times under 19 minutes were Frank Ricker, Sam Schnaubel, Jack Cohen, Will Fincher and our fastest boy's finisher, Rylan Pettit, with a time of 16:39 earning him 8th place in the Varsity A race.     Our fall production "Mother Courage and Her Children" will rehearse today from 4-6 in the Black Box.
     
    Auditions for this year's competition play "Stroke Static" will be held Monday from 4-6 in the Black Box. Questions? See Mr. Noland in room 802.
     
    Junior Class Council will meet on Wednesdays at 8:15 in Room 611.  Join us to help get ready for Homecoming and the upcoming Powder Puff game.  
     
    Powder Puff game will be October 4th.  Seniors and Juniors interested in playing can pick up a packet in room 611, L407 or the Main Office.  See Ms. Leslie or Mr. Acquino with any questions.
