    DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE

     

    This course will provide students with regular opportunities in class to develop their speaking, writing, and reading skills in a variety of settings, types of discourse and topics. Also, it will connect the language with the cultural competence needed to learn a target language and will connect it to other school disciplines such as music, science and sports through projects. This course will allow students to interact with the language through fun activities like games, plays, pedagogical projects, compositions, role plays, daily activities , recipes, etc. the teacher will use the Spanish language exclusively in class and will require students to do likewise.

     

    OBJECTIVES

     

    In accordance with the AP guidelines presented by the College Board and as stated on AP central, students will be able to:

    • Comprehend formal and informal spoken Spanish; acquire vocabulary and
    • structures to allow the easy accurate reading of newspaper and magazine
    • Articles, as well as modern Spanish and Latin-American literature.
    • Compose expository passages.
    • Express ideas orally with accuracy and fluency.
    • Practice the target language in a real context taking into account the   culture, diversity, customs and social differences.
    • Be aware of the Hispanic culture when using the four skills.

     

    To prepare students for effective communication in Spanish, students will practice speaking, writing, reading, and listening utilizing authentic written and auditory sources provided in texts cited below, or on line sources.

     

    Speaking:Students will be asked to sign a pact to speak with teacher and classmates to communicate exclusively in Spanish with one another. Within the first two weeks of the first semester, students will present a scrapbook to the class in which they explain how they spent their summer vacation, identifying family and friends, places, and activities in which they participated. Students are required to provide visuals, but they do not have to be real photographs, they can use clip art, or magazine pictures. 

     

    To assist students in speaking more proficiently in informal conversations, students will participate in simulated telephone conversations as well as discussions related to vocabulary themes from the textbooks “Continuemos and Triangulo”, or current events and cultural themes.

     

    To prepare students for speaking presentations in a formal setting, students will be required to discuss and/or compare and contrast opinions and ideas presented in authentic auditory and reading materials, such as online magazine or news articles, provided by the teacher or researched by the student. To practice formal presentations and stimulate class discussion, at the beginning of the year, students will be provided a list of topics related to the target language and/or culture from which they choose and arrange the date that they will present a charla to the class. Students will be responsible for providing the class with a copy of the written text as well as a visual (such as a picture, graph or power point) or auditory source (even an authentic song) that they will use in presenting the main ideas and expressing their opinion about what they read.

     

    Writing: Students will write journal entries, emails, and both informal and formal letters on a variety of topics related to the vocabulary themes studied in class. From the first week of class, students will keep a journal and will be required to write letters directed to either characters in short story, or real or imagined people

    in their personal lives.

    Additionally, after reading and/or listening to an authentic text, students will analyze, compare, contrast and synthesize ideas through written expression.

    Throughout the course, students will practice developing a strong thesis to connect main ideas and synthesize information gathered from more than one source. To assist students in comparing, synthesizing, and citing sources, students will be provided with graphic organizers, as well as a list of cohesive devices and transition phrases.

     

    Reading: Students will read a variety of authentic materials including short stories from Album, news, and magazine articles including, but not limited to Noticias and el pais.com. Students will be encouraged to seek out articles that are of personal interest to them and will be provided with a list of on line sources.

     

    Listening: Students will listen to dialogs, narratives, video presentations provided by Triangulo, Noticias, Continuemos, and AP Preparing for the Spanish Language Exam, as well as a variety of authentic auditory materials including: radio broadcasts and songs.

     

    Culture: Students will be aware and appreciate the second language culture through meaningful activities that let them practice the four skills. There will be a variety of culture themes that will allow students to understand and comprehend the history, reality and Hispanic traditions. The activities would be a newspaper reading comprehension, particular news in a Spanish radio station, a summary of

    a movie, a speech or presentation of a custom or tradition, etc.
