SPANISH Course Description: Students will participate in a variety of activities to practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in order to improve their proficiency in Spanish. As we progress, you will become more capable of functioning effectively in Spanish by obtaining information from spoken and written messages, communicating orally and in writing, and using more advanced structural concepts and vocabulary. Cultural aspects of the language and respective countries will also be explored.Grading:The grading system is based on total points for the quarter (10% of grades being formative and 90% of grades being summative). There will be a variety of formative (practice – doesn’t count towards the final grade numerically or has a smaller numerical count toward the final grade) and summative assessments (does numerically count towards final grade with a heavier weight). Continuing to practice Spanish outside of the classroom is critical. Most assigned homework will be checked for completion. Homework is essential and expected in order to progress in language development and mastery. The practice you do on your own at home will reinforce the skills needed to be successful on assessments in class. By doing this, you’re taking control of your own learning. You will be given many opportunities to demonstrate your knowledge of the material, as well as many practice activities prior to the graded activities. Remember your grade in Spanish is determined by your performance on assessments. Therefore, identifying areas in need of improvement and practicing of skills through homework and class activities are a vital part of achievement.Retake Policy:Retake opportunities are at the discretion of Srta. Wright and they are limited. At a time arranged between you and Srta. Wright, you must first meet w/ her to practice and to show your effort to have learned the material and then a time will again be agreed upon for the retake. If you miss either appointment, the offer for the retake is withdrawn. Retakes must be done no later than two weeks (5 classes) after the quiz is given or returned. Note that the re-take policy applies only to Spanish 2 and 3. Spanish 2 students may re-take 1 grammar and 1 vocabulary quiz per quarter. Spanish 3 students may re-take 1 quiz per quarter. For upper levels, students should talk with Ms. Wright privately if they are concerned about their grade. Additionally, Ms. Wright is available on select mornings for remediation. Please contact her via e-mail to set up an appointment.Academic Integrity: If a student is caught cheating or uses an online translator or the help of a native speaker, they will earn a zero as this is a direct violation of the honor code. Parents and administrators will be notified as well.
