• Wrapping up the 2011-12 School year

Posted by Gretchen Swierczynski on 6/12/2012
This completes my fourth year at Douglass and boy does time fly when you are having fun ( and reading and writing!!!)  This year my students were successful in multiple areas!  I am extremely proud of each one for the work they accomplished and the effort they put forth .  We continued to work on the This I Believe project ( NPR), used Wordles, created Digital Stories, used Bloggster, created vokis, wrote biopoems used images to create fictional stories and practiced  five paragraph essays .We used a great short story website and new sites for listening to digital stories.  We read many, many books such as; Into the Wild, Dark Song, Nothing- paired with The Lord of the Files movie, Good Behavior, The Adoration of Jenna Fox, "It all Changed in an Instant" More Six Word Memoirs, Son of the Mob, The Five People you Meet in Heaven, Rules of Survival, The First Part Last and Love that Dog ( I am sure I have left some out!!) We read Articles of the Week (AOTW) and learned about how to write reflections. We wrote and wrote and wrote!!  We Journaled, Blogged, Reflected, Summarized, Book Talked, and wrote superb fictional stories.  Over all we really accomplished quite a bit!!  I can proudly say, with great pride, we practiced Literacy on a daily basis!  I hope that all the students I came into contact with this year will continue to let Literacy into their lives on a daily basis!  Please keep reading and writing ( journaling or blogging over the summer!!) Peace!

  • End of the first nine weeks

Posted by Gretchen Swierczynski on 11/3/2011 3:15:00 PM
What a great nine weeks it has been!  I have enjoyed the morning block co-teaching with Mrs. Ashley Miller.  Our middle school communications class was amazing, we accomplished so much!  The students studied Newspapers, Advertising, Publishing, Public Speaking, and Debates!  My midday high school seniors read two intense books, Nothing and Into the Wild.  They also viewed Lord of the Flies ( both movies) and integrated technology into their learning!  Check out the buttons on my page titled: vokis, photostory, This I Believe and Book Talks.  The midday class also used edmodo as a blog to discuss the books we read.  I can't wait to see what the next nine weeks bring! Peace and Reading,
    Mrs.S

Posted by Gretchen Swierczynski on 10/26/2011
Students will begin to analyze the both movies from the novel, Lord of the Flies.  They will also be asked to compare/contrast  the movies with the novel, Nothing by Janne Teller.  I am planning on integrating technology for these final projects.  Projects such as:
    • vokis
    • edmodo
    • digital story telling
    • wordles

any suggestions or ideas..drop me a line.

  • Lord of the Flies

Students in midday are winding down the nine weeks by viewing both DVD versions of Lord of the Flies .  Students are taking notes on Characters, Plot and Setting.  They are also investigating conflict and symbolism in the story.  They will be asked to compare and contrast the Lord of the Flies DVD's with the book, NOTHING by Janne Teller.  The book, NOTHING, has been referred to as the modern day Lord of the Flies.
