As we head into the last quarter, our students in Grades 3-5 are gearing up for SOL Testing.
On Friday, April 20th a Connect Ed message went home to all parents of students in Grades 3-
5 which included the SOL schedule. We will be obtaining prior permission for SOL retakes
from all 3-5 grade parents via a letter being sent home in Friday Folders on Friday, April 28th
Parents are being asked to indicate whether or not permission is granted for each grade level
test IF the child is eligible for a retake on the letter that is received. The permission form is to
be returned to the child’s teacher no later than Wednesday, May 3rd.
Once a year, a week is designated to our wonderful staff to express our appreciation to them for all that they do for our children. This school year, Staff Appreciation Week will be from Monday, May 1st through Friday, May 5th. Our staff puts forth an enormous amount of time and effort into their work on a daily basis. They work so hard and want to provide our children with the best educational experiences. We all know that the education profession is not one that people enter for extrinsic value but for the rewarding accomplishments that our children achieve.
Please come and join us at HFES for an evening of fun!!! Beginning at 5:00 pm, we will have our Family Book Fair Night. This is a great opportunity for children to select from a variety of books to enhance their home libraries. Then at 6:30 pm your family can head right over to the gym for our PTA Bingo. Many of our staff will be in attendance to join in the fun!! We look forward to seeing you there!
The School Board recently honored HFES along with other award winning LCPS buildings
for achieving the 2016 Energy Star certification. At the meeting, the School Board approved
a Resolution of Commendation for the individuals and communities that worked so hard to
achieve a 2016 ENERGY STAR certification for their building. This prestigious recognition
indicates that our school is one of the 25% most energy efficient schools in the nation. We
will receive a plaque to hang in our front lobby area. This will be added to the already
existing plaques from previous years. Please be sure to take a look the next time you visit our
It is with great enthusiasm that I share with you that HFES First Grade Teacher Alissa Wetton, is the recipient of the Tech4Learning Innovative Educator Award! This award is provided to educators who “passionately utilize technology as a means for students to creatively and rigorously demonstrate their content knowledge and understanding especially when it involves Tech4Learning products such as Wixie”. We are very proud of Alissa and the work she does with her students as well as our HFES staff members.
As the weather becomes cooler and more unpredictable, we have more parents driving their children to school. Again, I cannot stress enough the importance of safe driving practices during morning drop off. We continue to have students exiting cars on the Dabner side when the cars are not parallel to the sidewalk where staff are stationed during morning drop off to safely supervise. Please do not have your child exit a car unless he or she is able to exit directly onto a sidewalk.
It was great to see so many of you today at our annual Sing A-long!!! The 5th Grade Chorus did a wonderful job performing today! The Freedom High School Chorus joined our 5th Grade Chorus for a few songs and then performed a few songs of their own. It was great to see many former HFES students visiting our school again.
There is always great learning taking place at Hutchison Farm Elementary!! Not only for our students, but our staff as well. In December, we had 5 staff members attend the VSTE (Virginia Society for Technology in Education) conference in Virginia Beach. The focus of the conference is to provide attendees with the most recent, cutting edge tools, techniques, and connections. In fact, two of our attendees presented at the conference!!! We are looking forward to seeing them implement many of the new things they learned into their practice!
We hope that everyone had a nice and relaxing Thanksgiving Break. Prior to the break we celebrated American Education Week and enjoyed the many activities that were planned within the school. We had over 700 visitors that week. The parent turnout within the classrooms was amazing!! Thank you parents for visiting our school and being an active participant!
Please remember to join your child at school for an activity in his/her classroom this upcoming week in honor of American Education Week. We do ask that you bring a picture ID with you for entry into the building. We expect a large crowd and as a result there may be delays with signing in, retrieving a visitor badge, and transitioning to the classroom. Please plan accordingly and allow yourself enough time for this transition and delay.
We would like to honor our veterans during school lunch this school year. On Friday, November 11th students are asked to invite family members who are active duty military or veterans to visit our Husky café for a free freshly baked cookie. Hutchison Farm Elementary would like to thank all of our veterans and active duty military for serving our country and protecting our freedoms.
American Education Week is scheduled for November 14-18. This a time for us to celebrate public education and the quality education that our children are receiving at Hutchison Farm Elementary. We would like to invite all of you to our school to share in an activity with your child during AEW. Your child’s classroom teacher will be sending home information specific to your child’s classroom activity. A school schedule of events will be sent via email and posted on our school website. We look forward to your visit during American Education Week.
As we are midway through the first quarter, teachers are recommended to send home interims to parents to communicate any academic, social or behavioral concerns. There are times when our staff chooses to send interims home as a communication tool to update parents on their child’s progress regardless. Recently, our staff have been provided with a new “progress report” tool that can replace the former “interim” report used in the past. At Hutchison Farm Elementary, we have provided our staff with the option to use the new “progress report” tool this quarter. Some of you may see this tool this upcoming week. We will be asking for feedback as well as input from our staff and parents on the “progress report” tool prior to making a decision on full implementation. Thank you in advance for your support during this transition.
Our Boosterthon Fundraiser is off to a great start and we had over 50% of our students registered after the second night – this is amazing!!! This fundraiser is important to our school programming as it will continue to provide us with funds to support our school vision which is to support student and staff learning. Funds that are raised will be used to purchase items such as technology hardware, technology software, literature to support our new balanced literacy program, and additional materials to enhance student learning in the classroom and throughout the school. We truly appreciate the support you are providing with our annual fundraiser!
The opening of the 2016-2017 school year has been a success. Our students came to school on the first day of school ready to learn and full of enthusiasm. When asking children throughout the week how their first week of school has been, many of the children were responding with “great-I have the BEST teacher”. This is always wonderful to hear as I am sure it is music to your ears as well!
Thank you to all of our Hutchison Farm families for celebrating our staff during Staff Appreciation Week. Our staff were honored for all of their hard work and dedication. We appreciate all of the wonderful ways in which you took the time to say “thank you” to our staff. It truly meant a great deal to all of us here at Hutchison Farm Elementary. A special message from the front office staff: Thank you all for your kindness and generosity during Staff Appreciation Week!! We felt much appreciated and so enjoyed the wonderful cards, gifts, pictures, banners and yummy treats from you and your amazing students! Another wonderful reminder how fabulous our parents and students are here at “The Farm”!
Once a year, a week is designated to our wonderful staff to express our appreciation to them for all that they do for our children. This school year, Staff Appreciation Week will be from Monday, May 2nd through Friday, May 6th. This year I have noticed a remarkable effort on everyone’s part to work together to support all of our children. Our staff puts forth an enormous amount of time and effort into their work on a daily basis. They work so hard and want to provide our children with the best educational experiences. We all know that the education profession is not one that people enter for extrinsic value but for the rewarding accomplishments that our children achieve. After working in the field of education for 21 years, I have learned that the most valuable gift you can give a teacher is recognition for their hard work. Many of our families have been taking the time to write lovely emails recognizing our wonderful staff and this is very much appreciated. This means more to our staff than you will ever know!!! A simple “Thank You” note or letter of recognition will go so far and will be something that will make a big difference to so many of our staff members during Staff Appreciation Week or any time throughout the school year. So, if you have a moment, please take the time to thank your child’s teacher or a staff member who works with your child, for all of their hard work and dedication. It will go a long way.
During the months of April, May and June, child placement meetings will take place with classroom teachers, counselors, specialists, and administration. This process is extremely thorough and your input is important and is taken into consideration when placing your child in a classroom for the 2016-2017 school year. Attached is a Parent Questionnaire for each of you to complete. It is optional; however, any input that you can provide regarding your child will be helpful and considered. Requesting a specific teacher is not an option. The questionnaires are due back no later than Thursday, March 31, 2016. If your form is returned after the above mentioned date, placements may have already been made for the next school year. Also, if you have siblings (twins/triplets) in the same grade, we will place them in separate classrooms unless you request in writing that you would like them placed together in the same classroom. You may make this request on the Parent Questionnaire. Your input is valued and important.
We certainly experienced quite a storm during January. I want to personally thank everyone for being so supportive once we returned after being out of school for a week. We had fewer tardies the week we returned from the snow storm than we have experienced all year long. It appeared as if everyone preplanned and provided themselves with plenty of time in the mornings when returning to school. Our custodial staff worked endlessly on preparing the campus for student and staff return. This was a very difficult task, but they did an outstanding job and we are very proud of them.
December was a busy month with many exciting activities taking place at school for our students. Our PTA Winterfest was enjoyed by all of those in attendance. I would like to thank Mrs. Sam Jackson for organizing the Winterfest. Her efforts are very much appreciate! THANK YOU MRS. JACKSON!!!! Prior to leaving for break, we were able to experience an exceptional performance from our 5th Grade Chorus. The Freedom High School Choir participated in our Sing a Long and performed with our 5th grade chorus – this was amazing to watch!! There were students in the Freedom Choir who had previously attended Hutchison Farm Elementary. Our chorus sang, danced, and played musical instruments, it is the largest participation rate in 5th grade chorus that we have ever experienced at HFES. This program has been extremely successful and could not be possible without our wonderful music teachers, Mrs. Heverin and Mr. Fuhrman, they are truly amazing and love what they do!!!
It was wonderful to see everyone during American Education Week. We had a wonderful turnout with many parents and additional relatives coming to the school to participate in activities with our students. The students were very excited and we are truly thankful for your participation.
As we head into November, you will notice that we have many exciting events planned for the month. Keeping your newsletter and calendar handy may be advantageous. During the week of 11/16-11/20 we invite you to join us as we celebrate American Education Week at Hutchison Farm Elementary. We would like for you to be a participant in the many events we have planned. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to spotlight the accomplishments of our children. The week will include a classroom activity in every child’s classroom at every grade level. Each grade level has chosen a specific day for their activities. Please see the included schedule for grade level designated dates. Your child’s teacher will be sending home more information regarding the events that are planned. The schedule will also be posted on the HFES homepage. We look forward to seeing all of you during American Education Week!
It is amazing to think that we are already midway through the 1st 9 weeks. All of you will be participating in parent/teacher conferences soon with your child’s classroom teacher. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to discuss with your child’s teacher any successes and challenges that your child may be experiencing so far this school year. If for any reason, your child is facing challenges that we are unaware of, we want you to inform us so that we can assist your child here at school. It is important that we work together to support our children.
