    Welcome to 1 – 21stCentury Literature 1 (Reading)! We are so excited to be here and look forward to getting to know each one of you. This is a new experience for you, and we want you to feel comfortable to approach us with questions and concerns. This class will challenge you to think and develop reading strategies and communication skills that will prepare you for your future. You each have a story to tell and ideas to offer, so get ready to be involved. Strong student participation is required. We are going to have a great year together!

    Materials:

    Three-ring binder

    Divider pages

    Loose-leaf paper

    Blue or black pens

    Colored pens, pencils, or fine-tip markers

    Composition notebook (wireless)

    Highlighters (one or two)

     

    Course Overview:

    Throughout the year you will…

    Learn and develop many important English and Reading fundamentals, such as: reading fluency; vocabulary acquisition; comprehension skills; reading strategies; and literary terminology.

    Learn about and develop various academic skills, such as: time management; reading a textbook; study strategies; notebook organization; and test-taking strategies/stress management.

    Learn about various learning styles in order to understand how you learn best.

    Engage in various analytical and creative writing activities and novel-based work

    Listen to and present book reviews and book talks.

    Explore high interest reading and learn about how to select books you will enjoy reading.

     

    General Procedures and Guidelines:

    Students are expected to come to class on time and prepared.

    Students are expected to be mannerly and cooperative andrespectful.

    Students are expected to put forth their best effort and to participate in class activities.

     

    Grading:

    Grading will be done by the point system. Each assignment, test, quiz, or writing task will be assigned a certain number of points. The number of points a student earns on an assignment will be recorded in our grade-book. For instance, a student may earn a 33 on an assignment worth 40 points. (This translates to an 83 on a 100 point scale.) Grades follow the Loudoun County Grading Scale. 

               

    Homework:

    An assignment is expected to be completedbefore coming to class.

    All homework assignments are expected to be completed in a timely manner.

     

    Absence Policy:

    Each day, Mrs. Chapman will record the day’s activities, assignments, Bell-Ringer, and homework missed in class in her binder.

    Each student will be responsible for finding out what work was missed. On the day you return to school, be sure to see Mrs. Chapman (or Ms. Penn) to get your make up work.

    When a student knows he/she will miss a class due to prearranged absence or sports/school activity,prearrangingmakeup work is preferable.

    Basic Skills or Titan Time should be used to make up tests/quizzes missed for absences.

     

    Goals:

    Our goal is to see you succeed. While the work is intensive, the end products you create will be well worth your effort. What becomes even more important is that you enjoy the learning process and come away with an even stronger use of reading and writing strategies. Your goal is to do your best work so that you can be proud of your accomplishments.

    Copying another person’s work is an honor violation and will be treated as such.
