    Shannon Cornell

My professional career started after I earned my Bachelor's Degree in 1996 from Edinboro University of PA in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. I moved to Virginia and began working at a private school right after graduation. In 1998, my career in Prince William County began as a second grade teacher. After 7 years, I earned my ESL certification and became an ESL teacher where I worked with students in all grade levels. In 2008, Steuart Weller was constructed here in Loudoun County and I transferred to be with my children. In 2010, I earned my Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction.

A little about me.  I am married to my high school sweetheart and we have two wonderful boys; one in college and one a Senior in HS. Both attended Weller as children which makes this school feel so much like home.  My husband and I love to hike, spend as much time outdoors as possible, and learn about the nature around us. I have now lived in Loudoun for 24 years, but I grew up in a rural community outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania which makes me a die-hard Pittsburgh sports fan.

Let me sum up my feelings on teaching with one of my favorite quotes by Rita Pierson. She says, "Every child deserves a champion--an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be."  I am excited for the new school year even with all the challenges that lie ahead and look forward for each child to be the best that he/she can be.

I joined Steuart Weller Elementary School in 2009 after spending 5 years in Fairfax Public Schools.  I graduated from Taipei Teacher’s College in Taiwan with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. Later I earned a Master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.
I love the diversity of our students.  They are motivated to learn the English language. At the same time, they have so much to share about their culture and customs.
In my leisure time, I like to cook, travel, and spend time with my two daughters.

Mrs. Curling is excited to be back at Steuart Weller in the EL Department for the 2019-2020 school year! Mrs. Curling earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish and her Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction.  Mrs. Curling began her teaching career back in 2000 but took a few years off to be at home with her young children. Mrs. Curling is thrilled to have been back in the classroom as a resource to students who are learning English as an additional language for the past 6 years.  Mrs. Curling will work with her students to do their very best.  She is looking forward to a wonderful and successful school year!

Ms. Gillis began teaching at Steuart Weller in 2011 after taking off several years to care for her three children. She taught 3rd grade at Steuart Weller for 8 years before becoming an EL teacher. Ms. Gillis earned her Master's Degree in TESOL in 2018. This year will be her second year as an EL teacher. She is super excited to be a part of such an awesome team. Ms. Gillis is looking forward to meeting her new students and having a wonderful school year. Go Wildcats!
