First Grade Word Study!
Literacy is like a braid of woven threads. Children experiment with putting ideas on paper as well as begin to master the form of oral communication. As students mature into readers, their form of communication is through written language. Word Study is a hands-on activity that uses a basic cognitive learning process. We compare and contrast categories of words in order to discover certain similarities that words have with one another.
During Word Study, words and pictures are sorted in ways that require students to examine and make judgments about speech sounds, word structures, meanings, and spelling patterns. These activities that the children are doing are activities that students are already doing on their own in their minds. Word Study lets the students examine words and break them apart while looking at the patterns in the words.
Please look at the FEATURE SCORE, WORDS CORRECT, HANDWRITING, and SENTENCE score.
The FEATURE SCORE is whether or not the student sorted the words in the right category. This is important to sort the right way and look for the patterns.
The WORDS CORRECT are the words the student spelled correctly.
The HANDWRITING is based on neatness and formation.
The SENTENCE will be graded for its structure, punctiation, and capitalization.
