    COURSE TITLE: Instrumental Methods (Grades 9-12)
    PREREQUISITE: N/A
    This class requires a recommendation and/or audition by the band director and is primarily a percussion class. Class time will be spent on techniques of proper tone production, fingerings, rhythmic drills, ensemble playing, and scale drills. The ensemble is performance oriented and will be involved in concert appearances and Virginia Music Educators Association events. As a co-curricular ensemble, performances and rehearsals outside regular school hours are a requirement.

    This performance-oriented band participates in concert appearances and Virginia Music Education Association events. Students continue the in-depth mastery of basic fundamentals of music while preparing pieces for performances. Students provide their own instruments through rental or purchase. As a co-curricular ensemble, performances and rehearsals outside regular school hours are required.

    Students in this class expand their knowledge and skills of instrumental techniques, tone production, musical interpretation, and ensemble/solo performance to an advanced level. Concert Band II is a performance-oriented class, and students are active in numerous concerts and events. Students provide their own instruments through rental or purchase. As a co-curricular ensemble, performances and rehearsals outside regular school hours are a requirement.

    The basic fundamentals of jazz (theory, interpretation, improvisation, and other techniques) are covered in this performance-oriented class. Students provide their own instruments through rental or purchase. As a co-curricular ensemble, performances and rehearsals outside regular school hours are a requirement

    COURSE TITLE: Music Appreciation (Grades 9-12)
    PREREQUISITE: N/A
    Music Appreciation is open to any interested student and is not a performance class. Students will broaden musical tastes through the study of a variety of musical styles. Correlations of art, architecture, and history will be drawn when possible. Medieval, renaissance, baroque, classical, and 20th century literature will be studied. The class will also examine jazz, pop, and country music and the influence of audio-technology on students’ lives.

    COURSE TITLE: Music Theory/History (Grades 9-12)
    PREREQUISITE: N/A
    Open to interested students and not a performance class, the curriculum will deal with traditional harmonic structure, common contrapuntal devices, and sequential harmonic structure. Topics will include rhythm, pitch, counterpoint, harmony, form, analysis, history, style, and 20th century popular music. Students will gain an increased awareness, appreciation, and enjoyment of a vast selection of music literature. Keyboard skills will be developed and original composition will be encouraged.
