• First Grade Music - An Overview
In First Grade Music we focus on developing a love of music through active participation!  Students experience music by singing a variety of songs, playing games, playing instruments, listening to different genres and exploring movement.  They begin to develop skills using the basic elements of music.  These elements include Rhythm, Melody, Harmony, Form, Expression, Timbre, and Genre.  Ask your child to share with you some of the chants, poems, and songs they are learning in music class!

Quarter 1 The focus of this quarter is to establish procedures and routines in the music classroom. Students will explore their speaking, whispering, singing, and calling voices with a variety of songs and rhymes. They will practice pulse (steady beat) as they sing, move and listen to music, and as they play a variety of classroom percussion instruments with songs and listening selections.

Quarter 2 The focus of this quarter is to practice the traits of a musician as a listener, performer and collaborator. Students will practice their singing with seasonal songs including Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and December holidays. They'll identify the steady beat of music and demonstrate the beat through movement and playing instruments. They will also identify the concept of high and low, higher and lower, and upwards and downwards melody. The concept of rhythm will be introduced towards the end of the quarter along with "ta" and "rest" (quarter note and rest).

Quarter 3 This quarter 1st grade students will continue to practice the traits of a musician as a listener, performer and collaborator. Rhythm and melody will be the focus this quarter. Students will read rhythms containing quarter notes and rests ("ta" and "rest") and barred eighth notes ("ti-ti"). They will identify and read rhythm patterns in familiar songs and new songs. They will learn songs containing the melodic pitches "So" and "Mi" and read them on a 2-line staff. Students will learn about the Lunar New Year and sing songs in Chinese.

Quarter 4 In the last quarter of 1st grade, students will work on demonstrating the traits of a musician as a listener, performer and collaborator. Melody and repertoire will be the focus this quarter. Students will sing songs and read melodic patterns containing the melodic pitches "La," "So" and "Mi". And they will learn how to read those pitches on a 2-line music staff.
