Mrs. Hanes is an artist, educator and long-time Loudoun resident, and 2023-24 is her sixteenth year with LCPS!  At SCES, she enjoys seeing students grow and develop as artists and members of the school community. As a teacher, one of her favorite things is when students surprise her with their original solutions to creative challenges. She also enjoys the occasional visits to other classrooms during lessons when she can see what students are learning and how it connects to Art.
Mrs. Hanes came to SCES after a career in the non-profit art world, including work as co-founder of Round Hill Arts Center, and in museums and historic sites (Virginia Museum of Fine Art, Corcoran Gallery, Washington National Cathedral).  She holds a BFA in Fine Art and French from Carnegie Mellon University, and a MAT in Museum Education from George Washington University.
Mrs. Hanes is a working artist as well as a teacher. She exhibits her artwork at numerous local and regional venues, including during the Western Loudoun Artists Studio Tour, when she loves to have visits from her students. Beyond artwork, her creative pursuits include knitting, gardening, sewing and cooking. Her family is passionate about nature and environmental science, and their farm is a certified wildlife sanctuary through the Audubon at Home program. She lives in western Loudoun where she and her husband have two children (one in college, one adult). They have a new little puppy, Josie, who helps keep their home full of love (and fur)!
