With a vision of a garden to nourish the birds, insects, and the minds of elementary children at Newton Lee Elementary School in Ashburn, a few energetic volunteers set out to clear part of a courtyard in May 2008. Through donations of plants, funds and some classes planting everything from small wildflowers to seeds that turned into towering sunflowers, the efforts have been fully rewarded! Newton Lee’s “inspiration” garden has now been officially recognized as a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. Plans are underway to engage the student body in a number of projects during the coming months, including mapping the garden, planning for more plots and replanting the seeds from the sunflower crop to experience a full plant lifecycle! Congratulations to all at NLE who have contributed to this and our Wildlife Habitat!
