• Do's and Don't for Parents in Speech Activities

    Parents Should:
    Be a good listener
    Be a good speech model
    Keep speech experiences happy
Start speech activity sessions with success and end with success
    Praise your child's efforts
Encourage good speech all day long- particularly if your child has corrected his sound and needs to remember to use it correctly all the time
Keep Speech Pathologist informed of child's progress at home

    Parents Should Not:
    Anticipate or interrupt child's speech
Correct the child too often for errors
Make child self conscious about his speech
Use negatives such as: "That's not right," "No" (instead use- "Listen again," "Let's try again"
Attempt to correct other misarticulated sounds at the same time

Remember, for speech to be adequate it must: (1) convey needs, ideas and emotions and (2) be a self satisfying experience.
