NEW!! Algonkian PTA is excited to offer our 1st thru 3rd grade students a beginner's Spanish Club! This club runs from October to May and will include a 30-minute of interactive conversation, music, stories, and crafts, including food activities. NEW!! Algonkian PTA is thrilled to offer to our 2nd and 3rd grade students a 4-week writing workshop called: Writing with Gopher! Science writer Terry Catasús Jennings, will share her research and writing methods using her book, Gopher to the Rescue! A Volcano Recovery Story, to engage students. As a non-fiction writer, Terry will draw parallels between her work and student assignments—from their current work to the college essay. Integrating science and literacy, students will learn to research a topic, build a five paragraph essay and revise their work after completion. At the end of the workshop, each student will receive a book of his/her work. Click here for more detailed information and to register! As part this Writer's Workshop, Sylvan Dell Publishing has offered a free trial of their e-books until November 20th. Students can access over 90 science and math titles from home and in school. Algonkian's students can read or listen to the e-books in English and Spanish as well as link to educational information and activities based on each book.
To access the books through the website, visit http://www.sylvandellpublishing.com and click on the orange "Enter Site Code" button on the right. Enter our code -- DJBZ67 -- and then click on e-books. If you would like to access the books via iPad, you must first download the "Fun eReader Picture Book" app. Once the app is downloaded, enter Algonkian's code into the school site license window and press the red Log In button. You do not need to enter names, emails or passwords.

String Instruments 2013-2014
An after-school strings program for 4th & 5th graders at Algonkian! This program is designed for an introduction of the string instruments to give students a head start for middle school. The instruments include: violin, viola, and cello. Also, Medieval orchestra for 4th grade and up if your child has had at least one year of instruction in bowed strings, guitar, recorder or percussion!Please contact Adrienn Salazar for information: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Algonkian Mathletes 2013-2014
Here is an awesome program for 5th graders! 5th grade students can extend their math skills through creative problem solvings. Not a tutoring program, this weekly club is for students who want that extra challenge in addition to their regular math classes. Running with the Stars - FALL 2013 SEASON
WHO: Open to all students – grades 1-5
WHAT: This running program is for boys and girls! It encourages participants to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. During the practices, we will play games, discuss healthy lifestyle topics, and prepare for our END OF SEASON 5K RUN!! The 5K is non-competitive. Our goal is for each child to strive for his/her own personal best.
WHEN: The session starts September 23 and ends December 8. Practices will be held twice per week: Mondays and Thursdays from 2:50 p.m. to 3:50 p.m., rain or shine, outside.
WHERE: The children will meet in the Activity Room directly after school.
Other Important Information:

Odyssey of the Mind 2013-2014
· An international competition for students in kindergarten through college
· An opportunity to practice creative problem-solving methods in a collaborative setting
· Team members work together to solve a "problem" and present their solution at a competition in the Spring (Date TBA).
· Emphasizes Creativity, Critical Thinking, Communications and Collaboration (the 4C's that many in the educational community agree are the keys to academic success).

Algonkian FIRST Lego League (pending for 2013-2014)
What is Algonkian FIRST Lego League?
4th & 5th graders can participate in the FIRST Lego League where, as a team, they will:
* Design, build, and program a robot using Lego Mindstorms technology.
* Apply real-world math and science concepts.
* Research challenges facing today's scientists.
* Learn critical thinking, team building, and presentation skills.
* Participate in tournaments and celebrations.
The Regional tournament is usually held in November and the State tournament is in December. Visit the FIRST Lego League website for additional info!

Computer Programming Club (pending for 2013-2014)
Little @rchimedes is an after-school computer programing club for grades 3-5 at Algonkian Elementary. The club provides a unique opportunity for students to learn the basics of computer programming in a fun, age-appropriate way. Little @rchimedes fosters inventiveness, logical thinking, and creative problem solving. Students will be exploring various computer programming topics using Scratch, a visual programming language for kids developed at MIT. Sounds interesting and fun?!?!

Chess Club 2013-2014
Sponsored by our Algonkian Guidance Counselor, Theresa Ryan, the Chess Club is opened to all students who love the game of chess. Chess Club meets once a month on Tuesdays, after school from 2:45 p.m.-3:45 p.m., and can participate in a final tournament.
