Parent CoffeesThe SHMS School Counseling Department hosts Parent Coffees periodically throughout the year. Parent Coffees are parent information sessions, on a variety of different topics. They are informal gatherings, usually with a guest speaker who presents on a particular topic. We typically conclude with questions and discussions with the speaker and attendees. It will be held on Wednesday, October 9th at 630-8pm at Brambleton Middle School!Eagle Ridge Middle School's Unified Mental Health Team will also be presenting "Everything You Need to Know About Middle Schools and Bullying" on October 29th at 9:00AM.November Parent CoffeeFiona Brown, our Student Assistant Specialist, will be here to provide parents with information and strategies to understand and support their student in navigating academics, social life, extracurricular activities and mental health in middle and high school. From a whole-child perspective, parents will learn to help their student develop resiliency factors that lead to improved well-being, decision-making, relationships, attendance and academic performance. We will present on all available course options, timelines and answer questions about scheduling. Rising 7th grade will be held in the Cafeteria and Rising 8th grade will be held in the auditorium. Margie Lang-Garnart, from Evergreen Counseling Center will be here to present "Anxiety in Adolescence: What's a Parent to Do?". Adolescents naturally experience anxiety about social situations, physical changes, school performance, family stress and larger, more global realities. This workshop will examine anxiety and the beliefs, perspectives and behaviors that exacerbate anxiety. We will look at perfectionism and its role to play in anxiety as well as societal trends that intensify anxiety. This workshop will also provide strategies for parents to help their child's capacity for coping with and conquering anxiety. It will be held on Friday, February 7th at 9:30am in the Stone Hill Library.March Parent CoffeeThe Wellness Connection will be here to present "Building Authentic Relationships Outside of Social Media". It will be aimed at helping parents understand how social media effects the brains of children and their socialization with one another. They will also encourage parents to start having conversations with their children about their current use and how to maintain a balance between social media and reality. It will be held on Friday, March 20th at 9:30am in the Stone Hill Library.
