• Welcome to Art!
    (2019-2020)

How important are the visual arts in our society? I feel strongly that the visual arts are of vast and incalculable importance.
Of course I could be prejudiced. I am a visual art.

Our program at Smart's Mill Middle School follows the LCPS art curriculum and can be found in its complete form at 6th Grade Art Curriculum and 8th Grade Art Curriculum.  Look here and Google Classroom for specific plans as the school year progresses!

Art 6 is a semester class and encourages each student to explore new ideas and processes as they solve creative problems. Opportunities are given to experiment with and learn about the properties of clay, printmaking, drawing, computer graphics, paints, textiles, metal, photography, mixed media and a variety of other materials.  Students use these tools to express themselves creatively and at the same time become more aware of the importance of the elements and principles of design.  Lessons are reinforced and enriched by looking at and analyzing works by artists who have made important contributions throughout history.

Students enrolled in 3D Design will be making art in it's sculptural form. Choice is encouraged as students problem solve ways to express their artistic vision three dimensionally. They also will be looking at the importance of the elements and principles of design in their own art and in the work of others considered important in the sculpture world.

Supplies to be brought to class:

    • Any pencil that will fit into a pencil sharpener.  (Mechanical pencils may be difficult with some projects)
    • 3D Design: students will be asked to bring in recycled materials from home as the need arises

    1st 9 Weeks Plans:

We will be looking at different meanings of IDENTITY and how it can influence the way we create and view art. As students explore art materials, they will be making choices about how best to communicate their ideas. In addition, they will be learning to make connections to the world around them, as well as critically reflect upon their own work and that of others. Students will have the opportunity to work with a variety of art materials.

Art 6: Non-traditional self portraits, computer journaling, logos and graphic design

3D Design: Exploration into the principles of design as they apply to sculpture, collaborative problem solving, name sculptures, creative living spaces

    2nd 9 Weeks Plan:

We will be trying out many new ideas while learning techniques and strategies to make our art the best it can be.

Art 6: Gestural clay creatures, personal Coat of Arms in copper repousse and paint, shading with color

3D Design: Plaster casting to create gestural sculptures, using movement in a variety of abstract and realistic sculptures

3D Design and Art 8 will incorporate the concept of Emergence into interesting clay containers with multiple pieces.

    Consider this...
    • Creativity is just connecting things... (Steve Jobs)
    • I am enough of the artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world...(Albert Einstein)
    • There is no doubt that creativity is the most important human resource of all. Without creativity, there would be no progress, and we would be forever repeating the same patterns. (Edward de Bono)
    • Each of us is an artist, capable of conceiving and creating a vision from the depths of our being. (Dorothy Fadiman)
    • To be truly creative, you have to work beyond what you know. Pushing the envelope is what being an artist is all about. (John Ferrie)
