    Latin I Course Outline
     
    The curriculum follows Loudoun County pacing guidelines. 
     

    1st Quarter

    Introduction

    Basic terms-parts of speech, syntax, macron, inflection, declension, conjugation, gender, number, case

    Alphabet, Pronunciation, Diphthongs

     

    Stages 1-3

    Nominative and Accusative case for declensions 1-3

    Present tense with 3rd person singular

    Adjectives

    Vocative

    Imperatives (including negative Noli and Nolite)

    Question words: ubi, quis, quid

    Oral Latin-simple commands and phrases that use the three items above

    Basic geography of Italy

    Roman House

    Roman Family

    Basic architecture terms

    Town of Pompeii

    Roman Food and Dining

     

     

    2nd Quarter

    Stages 4-6

    Present tense with pronouns ego and tu, 3rd person plural

    Imperfect and perfect tense of regular verbs and sum

    Adverbs

    Ablative case with cum, in, a-ab, e-ex-place where, place from which, accompaniment

    Numbers (1-20, 100, 1000, all Roman numerals)

    Question words: cur, quomodo, quot, -ne

    Forum and Theater

    Slaves and Freedmen

    Mythology –creation, Titans, Olympian gods and goddesses

    Continue oral Latin with phrases, quotes, proverbs, abbreviations

     

    3rd Quarter

    Stages 7-9

    Genitive case-possession

    Dative case for indirect objects-with verbs of giving, showing, telling

    Future tense of all conjugations and sum

    Ablative of means and manner

    Infinitive (pres. act.)

    Adjective agreement

    Superlative of adjectives

    Num? Nonne?

    Conjunctions aut, neque, correlatives et…et, neque…neque

    Enclitic -que

    Roman Death and Funerals

    Roman Baths

    Roman history, including Troy and Aeneas

    Mythology-Olympian gods and goddesses
