• Teenagers who are 14 and 15 years of age are required by Virginia Law to obtain an Employment Certificate (work permit) before they can begin working.

    Students can begin the process of applying AFTER a job has been acquired. Please see the steps below, once employed:

    This is done online and involves 3 consecutive steps:

    1. Youth registration (can only be done once a formal job offer has been made by the employer)
    2. Employer registration
    3. Parent/Guardian/Custodian registration

    Regulations & Limitations

    If you are 14–15 years of age, you--

    • May not work more than 3 hours a day on a school day;
    • May not work more than 18 hours a week in a school week;
    • May not work more than 8 hours a day on a non-school day;
    • May not work more than 40 hours a week in a non-school week;
    • May not work before 7 a.m. or after 7 p.m., except between June 1st and Labor Day, they may work as late as 9 p.m.;
    • May not work during school hours unless enrolled in a school work-training program;
    • Must be given a 30-minute rest or meal period after 5 consecutive hours of work.
